Caritas - Tuesday Evening [Open]

Marshall's nipples were scrape-free because he had smartly avoided body surfing today in class. Sure, he missed out on the fun but it was worth it. The last thing he needed was someone to walking in on him slathering vasoline on his nips again.

Tino didn't really want to hear about the state of Marshall's nipples but that seemed to be the topic at hand today at work.

"So what do you want to drink?" Dean asked as he and Claire took seats near the bar. "My treat."

"Just a soda is fine," Claire said. It wasn't like she could get drunk.

"You sure? They don't ID or anything here, and even if they did, I'm sure I could get around that for you."

Claire grinned. "There's really no point. It wouldn't do anything."

At least she assumed it wouldn't.

"Huh?" Sometimes Dean was a little slow on the uptake.

"You know, because of my thing," Claire said, rolling her eyes and hoping he would understand without her having to spell it out.

Dean's brain caught up. "Seriously?" he asked with raised eyebrows. "That kinda sucks. I mean no hangovers is awesome, but sometimes you just want to get drunk..."

Claire shrugged. "I've never been drunk, so I wouldn't know."

"Huh. Learn something new every day." Then Dean got a slightly conspiratorial look on his face. "Though you could probably make a lot of money with that if you ever needed to."

Now it was Claire's turn to be confused. "Huh? How?"

"Drinking games," Dean said. "You just bet people you can drink them under the table."

Claire smirked. "You're a bad influence. I love it."

"Being able to hustle in a bar is an important survival skill," Dean intoned seriously. "Me, I usually stick to pool or poker. Or darts sometimes. But you've got a God given talent just meant for fleecing the stupid."

"I feel like I should be taking notes," she joked. "But I don't know how to play pool or darts."

"Any time you want to learn, I'll be happy to teach you," Dean offered. "Both the game and how to make it profitable."

Claire nodded. "That would be great. I mean, hopefully the making it profitable part won't really be necessary, but it can't hurt."

"Hey, how do you think I've financed all my extra curricular activities here?" Dean asked. "Hustling pool's paid for furnishing my room, upkeep on my baby, dates, trips... you name it." He gave a lopsided grin. "Course I usually try to go to the mainland to do it -- don't want to play out the opportunities on the island, since this is home now."

"Well, my dad's giving me a decent allowance right now," Claire said. "But, hey, that's pretty cool."

"My dad's the one who taught me to hustle," Dean said. "Though I could probably ask for an allowance now that he's all settled and all. Or ask Zoe for one at least," he mused consideringly.

"Or you could get a job," Claire said with a smirk.

"Why would I want to do that?"

Claire laughed. "Okay, or not."

"Seriously, I already have a job -- or a vocation maybe is a better word," Dean said. "It's what I'll be doing when I leave at the end of the summer."

"It's a good vocation," Claire said, instantly becoming more serious. "It's good to know that people like you are out there doing good things."

Dean gave a real smile at that. "Thanks."

Claire smiled back. "I'm especially grateful knowing that you'll be looking out for Peter."

"Sammy would sulk if I didn't," Dean said.

"They seem really happy together," Claire said.

"Yeah, in the way that the sun is a little bit on the warm side," Dean said with a snort.

Claire grinned. "I'm glad. Peter deserves to be happy."

"Yeah, Sammy too. I'd do a lot to make sure he's happy."

"Like helping me keep Peter alive?"

Dean gave her a look. "You sound like you're talking about something more substancial than just worrying about random invasions and crap."

Claire nodded. "I told you what happened to my Peter, right?"

"That he and Nathan both got themselves killed," Dean said soberly.

"Yeah, it wasn't all as simple as that," she said, sipping her soda. "But we can talk about that some other time. We're here to have fun tonight."
