The Boards - Thursday, 6/23 - REHEARSAL!

Anyone who came to rehearsal would notice the store-bought brace in Geoffrey's ankle, as well as the fact that he was hobbling around. Someone had missed a puddle of sludge and slipped in it this morning.

"Thank you very much, all of you, for your help last Thursday. Rest assured, that will not happen again, and we should be able to proceed with rehearsals sans mops. We're finishing the play up for the first time on stage today, so considering that, if anyone has any choreography experience, they really should talk to Tony."

He grinned and slapped his hands together.

"And now? Let's get this show on the road."

[ocd up!]

"Electronic mail? I guess you didn't get it." She lowered her voice, "It's Tony's birthday. He's eighteen today. I ordered cakes at Chilly Boulder, ice cream cakes, and invited everyone. You too, obviously." Dinah grinned and raised her voice again. "Yay for no death on a date? And yeah, Galaxy Quest makes more sense if you've seen the other parts of the original series. We should watch it sometime! You might like it." She flipped her hair over her shoulder like Lt. Madison and burbled, "The computer says hailing frequencies are open, Captain!"

"There's more than just the movie?" Karla asked. "I think I'd like to see it."

She lowered her voice to match Dinah's. "The only mail I've ever gotten was on paper, not electronic. Sometime, I'll have to discover how it works. So we should all be there before you and Tony?"

Dinah nodded vigorously. "At handwavey time, after Reserves. You don't have to bring a present. Although it's traditional and all, but I didn't get the notices out 'til late." She smiled and said, "The TV series is out on DVD. We should watch it one of these weekends. Soooooo, is there going to be a second date?" Notice how smoothly she slipped that in there?

"Of course I'll bring a present!" Karla protested. "I gave one to Chuck, and I'm much better friends with Tony. I mean, it'll probably just be wine, but it'll at least be good wine."

Karla blushed and looked down. "I think there will be another date. We didn't set one or anything, but I'm pretty sure we both had a good time. I was in a lousy mood at the beginning because of, you know, things, but by the time dinner was over, I was feeling pretty good."

"That's great! Yay for feeling better after a date." Dinah bounced happily, and fed Priestly another bit of muffin. "And I'm sure Tony will appreciate the wine, too. Boys are harder to buy for, but that's always good."

Karla rolled her eyes. "Ugh. I don't know what is worse. Shopping for or with males. I used to just buy Morton a book I thought he'd like. Or good gear for horse-riding."

"Well, Tony doesn't have a car or motorcycle, I don't know enough about movie-making to get him good equipment, and the same goes for magic. So it's a DVD I hope he doesn't have, and a couple joke gifts." She grinned. "I know he'll like one of them at least."

"I wish I knew more about how Tony does his magic," Karla said, thinking. "Because that would make a good gift. But I'm pretty much in the same corral as you when it comes to knowing about Tony's magic."

"He got a whole laptop-- sorry, computer-- full of spells from a wizard back home," Dinah said. "And then she had to leave for her own dimension or something. So he's still figuring out how he does it too. Mostly I've seen him concentrate on something, say a few words, then something happens." She shook her head. "Maybe by Christmas, then."

Karla nodded. "I had a good time talking to Merlin about magic. Perhaps I should sit down and do the same with Tony some time."

Then she smiled at Dinah. "I know what a laptop is now. I have one. And a cell phone. Turtle was very helpful and gave me an excellent deal."

She'd said so herself.

"Turtle's sharp like that," Dinah said with a grin. Because return customers was better than anything else, too. "And I'm sure Tony would like that. He and Merlin set up the magic reserves after the military one because they were already practicing magic together, trying to figure out what worked. We have fun playing tug-of-war, my TK vs. his magic, when we're watching TV all the time."

"I'd like to do that," Karla said. "The British Bulldog game was my favorite meeting so far. I grew up with the idea that Craft should be fun, and yet everyone here seems to think magic is Awfully Serious Business. I don't get it."

"Probably because so many of us are from worlds where it isn't common at all, and it's something to hide for your own safety. Or just being accepted." Dinah smiled a little. "It's why I loved it the second I got here, and my Fandom Big Brother greeted me-- along with a crowd of about 20 identical guys-- then all of them melted together into one guy. It was awesome to know there were other people like me here."

Karla winced. Way to epically fail at sensitivity. Not that this was a new sensation for Karla, but she usually wasn't as concerned or bothered by it.

Now she was both.

"Right. Sorry," she said, looking sheepish. "I forget that not everyone grows up thinking about Craft as a fifth limb. And it being a reason to hide is even more foreign. I'll try to be better about it. I honestly didn't mean to be an insensitive ass."

"It's okay, really," Dinah said with a small grin. "It's kind of nice to know there's places where it doesn't have to be hidden, like yours and Tahiri's worlds. It gives me hope for my own."

"You give me hope for your world," Karla said seriously. "Tony, too. I almost wish I could have you guys come be my ambassadors to the landens."

"There's worse ideas," Dinah said, cocking her head, smiling. "Maybe just to start? We could do it on a visit?"

"I'd feel bad if I put you to work during a regular visit, but you know my Court will always be open to you, right? For as long as you'd ever want to stay," Karla said with a smile. "Though I wouldn't cry if you did decide to stick around and be my landen ambassador for a bit,"

"Cool! You have to visit New Gotham sometime, too. Just so you can have an idea what it's like," Dinah said. "And I think that'd be kind of fun, being an embassy. As long as I had some back up for the points where I'd definitely put my foot in my mouth."
