Turtle & Canary; Saturday [ 06/27 ].

There was an Event today, and it was Turtle's day, so that meant there were a lot of great deals going on at Turtle & Canary to go along with it. Even with being up late for radio, Turtle was in early to get a few weekly reports taken care of before attending to advertising. First was the catering to the usual island crowd:

And with that, the day was about to begin, and Turtle spend the lulls in customers trying to decide how to do her hair.

That's what she's there for!

There was a boy by the entrance. A very nervous boy, who had not seen the girl inside since she showed up for an International Bootycall. He was not sure what the rules were regarding ex-girlfriend retrieval. There had to be rules, right? There were always rules.

Jeff reached out and knocked on the... doorway to the shop, then recoiled, stepped back, and made the international sign of warding off evil at it. Bad. Bad. "No good can come of this," he muttered.

See, and the thing with the shop was that it did have windows, and so Turtle, even if she didn't catch the knock, noticed all that very distinctive fiddling and shifting and nervousness and felt herself staring a moment. Because she realized that she didn't know how to handle this situation at all, either. Sure, she knew some people who had left were coming back for this thing, but she didn't think Jeff would be one of them. And the last time they saw each other, it involved her in another country and a weeked filled with a lot of sex that probably shouldn't have happened.

So she was kind of at a loss. They didn't exactly cover that one in 100 Tips to Being a Success, because it probably registered on the list of 100 Tips on How to Fail.

...Crap.

Knowing that Jeff could be at all that gesturing and muttering for a while, she sighed, realized she should probably take an initiative, and walked around the counter to the door, opening it up.

"Hi, Jeff."

There were rules! There had to be rules! Why hadn't anyone told Jeff the rules? Because Jeff had never had an ex-girlfriend before. Oh god. Even the telly didn't prepare you for this sort of thing, nor many many days spent at home on the couch watch porn and thinking about--

Oh god.

Oh god.

Oh god, she'd said hi. Jeff froze up. He had to say something! What did you say in return to a hi? Another hi. But then that hi would have to be followed by something else, something he should say, just turn around and walk away, Jeffrey, no wait, he couldn't do that, because he'd come all this way, and--

"H," he said.

Well, at least it wasn't 'hi'.

Some people could stand alone as examples of evolution. Jeff, meanwhile, was the perfect personification of de-evolution. Turtle sighed a little. "Would you like to come in?" she offered.

She was an ex! How did you talk to an ex? Especially one you'd slept with?

"--es," he finished, before his mind could quite catch up with his mouth. "Hes. Hi."

Beat.

"Damn it."

Well, this was going well.

"I didn't know you were coming this weekend," Turtle said, conversationally as she could, as she moved back and into the store and held the door open with the hopes that Jeff would at least shuffle in after her. She really didn't think Jeff would come back for just a dance, a thought that suddenly had her stomach twisting because, oh, God, what if he only came because the last time one of them went to the other, there was sex, and he came because of that, in which case, hello, awkward, because that was out of the question.

Because they couldn't just keep going and having sex just because the other showed up on their side of the pond, right?

Right.

"I-- got the invite," Jeff said. He looked momentarily surprised at the fact that he had managed to splutter something out in the first place. It was Turtle, though, which helped, and slowly, shufflingly, he did go after her. "Steve felt it would be a good idea if I came here."

And stopped bothering him with his relentless emo. And porn. Well, all right, Steve didn't mind the porn.

"I tried to discourage him, but he had me outflanked."

... oh god, he was just going to keep on talking.

"Outflanked?"

It was one of those things that Turtle knew she probably shouldn't ask, but out it came anyway.

"He... said... a few things."

Jeff was trying to swallow back his word-thingies now. To limited succes.

"He usually does," Turtle muttered, with no small amount of distaste, shaking her head. She drew in a breath and let it out with a sigh, "So how are things going on T&C London?"

Well, between all the time he'd spent moping out on the couch--

"We've narrowed down a few-- venues," Jeff mumbled, "We'll be closing on one soon, I swear."

If he would just stop turning into a ball of emo every time he saw the name Wexler on anything...

"Good locations?" Turtle asked, hopefully, trying to ignore the very conscious voice in her head pointing out how she jumped right into business because business was comfortable.

"Very solidly near the centre of London," Jeff said, nodding a bit. "I mean, I thought the enterprise would be able to fund it, you know."

It was better than saying please move to London with me it's awesome.

Much better, especially considering that she'd have to answer with I can't; I'm still in high school.

"Oh, absolutely," Turtle assured Jeff emphatically. "I mean, especially if the eventual revenue of the location will surpass any expenses in actually setting the place up, which shouldn't be a problem at all with the current business model. I hope. I know the numbers coming from Jamie are very impressive, and he doesn't even have nearly the population density you'll have."

"Right," Jeff said, nodding slowly, "Impressive numbers. And London is sort of dense population-wise, I mean. And nobody's got Slushies like we do, and robots."

"Right," Turtle agreed, nodding. "So it's got potential...."

And then another awkward silence settled in, where Turtle really didn't know what else to say.

Oh, Turtle. You should never leave Jeff with an awkward silence.

"...Robots are very good, potential-wise," he said, "I mean, it's a building asset back home, especially considering the frequency of robot-related carnage in the Tokyo area and everyone wants to be Japan these days."

"...I've got to start working an Asian market," Turtle mused after a moment.

"They could really have an interest in your assets!" Jeff said, desperately.

Turtle nodded a little, because they might, and then she paused a moment, because it was coming from Jeff and she wasn't sure if he meant assets or assets, and looking at him for a moment seemed to reveal nothing but a sad little reminder that he'd been gone for a while.

"Definitely something to look into," she muttered.

"Right," Jeff said, nodding, and gave her back a thumbs up. "...So how's the local branch?"

"Lots of laptop sales," Turtle reported, easily breaking out into a happy grin there and trying to ignore the wistful little part of her that noted how Jeff seemed (at that moment, anyway) to know exactly what to ask. "And with the second summer session coming in again, that means a whole group of potential other laptop buyers. I'm thinking of really putting it in to expand the technology section."

After breakfast Irulan made her way to Turtle & Canary, she was ready to buy that laptop. "Hello?"

"Hello!" Turtle greeted back, and a flash of recognition made her stop a moment, and the lexicon in her head flipped and clicked until things matched up. "Oh, Irulan!" That's right, she wasn't just crazy in thinking the woman seemed familiar. "Hi! I heard you were back!"

She paused for a second, taking longer to place her when... "Yes, I am!" And a little hesitantly, added, "Turtle."

"Well, what can I do you for today, Irulan? You've opened up a hat store, right? I haven't been in yet, but I should. I don't wear hats often, but maybe I should start."

"You should, hats are great accessories, everyone should have one!" Irulan said with a nod before adding, "Charlotte York told me this was the place I should go to purchase a laptop?"

Oooh, laptop purchace! Turtle brightened. "Of course! We've got lots of great, diverse, and affordable models. Come on." She moved around from behind the counter. "I'll show you. What will you be using the laptop for? We can use that to determine which to get."

"I'll be using it for my paperwork and I suppose for some email," Irulan answered, following Turtle. "I don't require it to be fancy but something I could use for business."

And please, let it not start thinking so it will not rise up and cause humanity's downfall. The last bit went unsaid.

"Do you think you'll be carrying it around a lot?" Turtle asked as they started to drift toward the technology section.

Irulan thought about it. "Yes, I shall be carrying it around from my home to the Imperial Brim."

"Hmmm," Turtle considered this a moment. "Then might I recommend..."

"~~Blah blah blah handwavey details and information about a laptop because my mun is clueless about technology~~?" she asked, taking a model from the shelf and showing it to Irulan. "This is actually the model I use for all my bookkeeping for the store."

Irulan was equally lost with technology speak. "Is it easy to use?" Then asked the question that's been on her mind, "And... it won't be capable of learning, would it?"

Learning and then rise-up to subjugate humanity.

"I can throw in some really great books to help you through it," Turtle said, "but once you start using it, it'll be a breeze. And what do you mean, learning?"

"That would be most helpful," Irulan said with a smile. "I suppose I mean, if this machine was capable of... learning to think on its own?"

She truly hoped not.

Turtle thought about that for a moment. "...it'll only be able to do what it's programed and told to do," she said, hoping that was the sort of answer Irulan was looking for.

That set Irulan's mind at ease. "Thank you, that's all I needed to know. I would like to purchase this please."

"Absolutely! Did you also want to get one of the how-to books to help you get used to it?"

"Oh, yes, those would really help. It would prevent the same disaster that happened when I tried to use my new speaker with my iPod the first time I used it."

Machines are scary.

"...Really, really loud?" Turtle guessed.

"It shook the foundations of my house," Irulan said, almost sounding like she's grousing.

"You must have some really great speakers, Irulan," Turtle said, trying her hardest not to laugh.

"They are, I just didn't know how great," Irulan said and laughed. "In retrospect, it was foolish of me just switch it on before checking the volume."

"But hey," Turtle said, chuckling a little since Irulan laughed. "At least you know they work!"

Irulan smiled. "True, at least I know I had my money's worth! I would probably be more miffed if it hadn't worked."
