Luke's Diner, Thursday

Priestly had just this morning managed to convince his mother that he didn't have to go home for the Fourth of July. Having a responsibility to assist a new, incoming student had helped. Alas, he'd had to compromise by promising to come home for a long weekend at the end of July instead, but that was forever away.

So it was a very cheerful Priestly in the diner, today. So much so that he didn't even mind the kitchen staff's teasing. In fact, he was in such a good mood that he went a little crazy with the specials sign.

He might regret that later when he realized the 10% was probably going to come from his paycheck.

Haley wandered into the diner with a growling stomach and the heavy aroma of nail polish. No, she hadn't painted her nails, but she had scratched her bike and rather than using detail paint, she went for a nail polish touch-up.

Noticing Priestly behind the counter, she grinned as she took a seat. "Glad to see you're not feasting on flies anymore."

"Oh, I dunno, I hear they have a lot of protein." Priestly grinned. "Somehow, you don't seem the sort to paint your nails."

Priestly was the sort. Hence him knowing immediately what the smell was.

"Well, every girl has her secrets right." Haley said in an teasing voice before going for the truth just a second later. "Actually, I scratched my bike, and I'm too cheap and lazy to use actual touch up paint. Plus, it's hard to find the perfect lime green paint; I've discovered lime green nail polish is a dime a dozen."

"Gotta love a girl with enginuity. And lime green nail polish."

"You can borrow it if you want. I only used a little bit of it, and like you said, I'm not the nail polish type. My mother used to have to paint my nails in my sleep." A beat. "Luckily, I'm stay pretty still while I sleep."

"Yeah, no kidding. Uh . . . why did your mom paint your nails in your sleep?"

"Well, she only did it once, but it was because I had a competition and she wanted me to look 'pretty'. I was going through a phase where I didn't want to wear makeup or anything though, so she waited until I passed out and then did my nails. The extreme hair and makeup when I woke up was really the worst part." Yeah, her mom still bombarded her with makeup whenever she saw her.

Priestly shook his head. "That sucks, man. My mom does stuff like that, too. Well, she would. If it occurred to her. Shave my goatee in my sleep or something."

"I love my mom, but she is crazy when it comes to the girly-girl stuff. It's actually why she put me in gymnastics to begin with." Haley admitted with a bit of a laugh.

"My mom's just obsessed with me being 'normal'. S'why she sent me here. Well, to private school, anyway. I'm really pretty sure she didn't research this place well enough before she shipped me off."

Haley had to laugh at that. This place definitely wasn't normal. Then again..."Well, what do you think is normal anyway?"

"I got no idea. But Mom seems to think it's not dying my hair, getting pierced and tattooed, and wearing a kilt, at the very least."

"The kilt must not be a family tradition then?" Haley teased. She wasn't sure if she would be considered normal, but she didn't really care either.

"Not so much, no. I don't know if we're even remotely Scottish."

"I have no idea what I am either. I just know that both of my parents grew up in the South. They've got the accent and everything; my mom more than my dad, but my dad can surprise me with the whole cowboy motif."

"You know, I've never been to the South. Well, Southern California, but that's kind of different, you know?"

"Yeah, I mean, I've been all around the country for competition and I've yet to see anywhere like Texas. It's definitely different; you know, in good and bad ways."

"It sounds like it's got . . . personality?"

"More in some parts than others, but yeah, it's got personality...and good Mexican food. I've yet to have any Mexican food better than this little place I know in El Paso."

"Speaking of which, what's good today? Besides everything cause there's ten percent off."

Priestly shrugged. "It's the same cook as usual. He does a decent burger, or I could whip up a sub or something."

Let's see, do I wanna kill time today by reading fanfiction, or working on a townie app?
