Ned hadn't been out and about much since the whole thing with other him and the other world. He wasn't about to miss his work though since he knew he could get some stress baking in there. He'd kicked most of the staff out of the kitchen and let them take up spots at the counter, relaxing and eating the food he made.

After her run in the preserve, Claire decided she was hungry. She was walking back through town and decided that the diner wouldn't care if she was a little sweaty so she stopped in for a burger.

"Hello?"

"Just a moment," Ned called, attention on what he was baking. "I'll be with you in just a moment."

"Okay," Claire said, making herself comfortable on one of the stools. "Whatever you're making smells incredible."

Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew he vaguely recognized that voice. But, he was ignoring that voice, pushing it behind all his closed doors and focusing on the cooking.

"Hopefully it'll taste good too," he called, smiling down at the food.

"You sound bu--" Ned said, finally looking up, catching sight of who was in the diner, recognizing the face in a sharp, almost painful memory and immediately ducking behind the counter he'd been working at.

That was... weird, to say the least. "Uh, are you okay?" Claire asked, glancing around to see if there was someone or something in the diner to cause that reaction.

"Whaaaaaaaaatcha makin'?" Kaylee drawled as she flung herself onto a stool.

"Apple pie," he said after a moment's pause to realize that that was a voice he recognized but not from any bad memories. "Hi."

"Good," she said, watching him. "Makin' apple pies? Any reason you picked apple?"

She was wondering if it was maybe a comfort thing, after last week.

Ben was in the mood for some diner food. Diner food had been such a staple of his for so long before coming to Fandom that he was kind of stunned that he hadn't eaten here before.

"Good morning," he said, sounding pretty chipper as he took a seat at the counter.

"Morning," Ned said, wiping his hands on his apron and wandering out. "How's it going?"

"Great. But I think it could be even better if the fried apple pie is any good," Ben said.

"I like to think it is," he said and grinned. "But, then again, I was the one that made it. I've got a bit of a bias."

"Well, you seem pretty trustworthy," Ben said. "I guess I'll take your word for it. I'll have the pie."

"Right away," he said, turning to dish up a piece of the pie for Ben. "And, if it's not good, I'll blame it on one of the other staff members."
