Wellspring Arms, Saturday

It was the weekend after a Fandom issue, which meant that Nathan Dayspring Summers was both enjoying the ensuing quiet and taking a moment to go through his own personal stash of heavy weaponry. With Jan not far behind, of course, even if there was no way in hell he'd let her near any of the actual weapons.

That would come when she was of the right age to name one, let alone lift it.

This didn't keep Jan from spending most of the day wandering through the store yelling 'Tee-sisty! Tee-sisty!' all the time.

Cable was just going to take that as a good thing.

Cable looked up at that voice, and identified the girl within a few moments. "Layla Miller," he greeted. "I apologise for assuming you wouldn't be in the market..."

This went for comedy. Take note.

"I prefer to let those with experience handle such equipment," Layla chuckled. "I just felt like dropping by and complimenting you on your choice of names for Jan."

Because really. Hope?

"It seemed appropriate."

It was also Deadpool's fault, but no one was going to find out about that.

He tapped his pen against his chin. "What's your timeline?"

It was Layla Miller. Mincing words seemed wasteful.

"Not yours," Layla replied frankly and appreciatively. "I came in from the Summers rebellion. It's about five or six years before Madrox shows up again to help out. In that timeline Jan is called Hope and you're being chased by Bishop across time. Still."

Bishop. Who, for the time being, seemed to have been put off of Jan's tail thanks to the maneuvers he'd pulled over the past year, but it was still early...

"Still," Cable echoed, thoughtfully. That communicated about all of that 'was there ever a layover or not and might this potentially still be in my future I'll have to think about that and what information you can give me might swing one way or the other in terms of usefulness so don't feel like I expect an answer' that he had such a knack at.

"Fortunately for you this island has some unique properties. Unfortunately for me that means what I would know about your future can make things rather... fuzzy," she replied. "And as evident from last week's alternate universe debacle, I don't know everything that can happen."

She gave Jan a small smile. "However if anything does come up... I'll be sure to pass something on."

"Probability has a funny way of obscuring itself until it smacks you head-on," Cable agreed, "But foreknowledge can define quite a lot of what follows."

He put down his pen again. "But that's just idle philosophy. Thank you."

"You're welcome," Layla replied cheerfully. "And when foreknowledge and random events fail to provide? Well... Whatever is? Is."

"Shit happens," Cable agreed, easily.

He was going to have to keep an eye on Layla. "What brings you to Fandom?"

With anyone else, that was a small-talk question. Considering who the two of them were? Not really.

"Stuff," Layla replied with a shrug. "There are some things here that I have to do to set things right in other places."

"Stuff," Cable echoed. "Always elaborate."

And more than a little suspicious.

Cable should be suspicious.

"It's the little things that make a difference," Layla said with a sly look. "Surely someone who has time-traveled as much as you have would appreciate that."

Actually, the fact that he had time-traveled as much as he did meant that he knew exactly how dangerous and how potent a phrase as cryptic as that was.

"Like a butterfly in the Pacific."

It was a very carefully non-answer.

"Or a butterfly stepped on and killed by a time-traveller," Layla replied with a smirk. "Each has their own cause and effect."
