It was the weekend after a Fandom issue, which meant that Nathan Dayspring Summers was both enjoying the ensuing quiet and taking a moment to go through his own personal stash of heavy weaponry. With Jan not far behind, of course, even if there was no way in hell he'd let her near any of the actual weapons.

That would come when she was of the right age to name one, let alone lift it.

This didn't keep Jan from spending most of the day wandering through the store yelling 'Tee-sisty! Tee-sisty!' all the time.

Cable was just going to take that as a good thing.

"Hi, Mr Dayspring!" Someday Jean would hear his real name. But that was not today.

"Morning, Jean," Cable called, lifting his cup of coffee in greeting.

"Jeeeean," Jan called. Not that that word got used a lot. Or anything.

"Hello Jan," Jean replied, not getting the joke at all. But that was okay. She was young still. "I'm sorry for missing last week."

"Last week was a crisis," Nathan returned, cracking a slight smile. "I think that can be excused. Coffee?"

"Oh!" It made her feel very grown up to be offered it still. "Of course."

Hopefully he had a lot of cream and sugar...

"All right," he said, and got up, wandering towards the back. "Keep an eye on her."

... Yes, she was a teenager.

But she was also Jean.

Which meant Jean just had to pick Jan up and grin at her. "Have you been a good girl?"

"Jean," Jan cooed, flailing at her. And towards the floor, a little. "Pancakes!"

"No, that's the floor, sweetheart," Jean assured her. "Pancakes come form a kitchen. Can you say kitchen?"

"Kisshen."

That might have been kitchen, or some bizarre reflection on her foster-father's sexlife.

"Very good!" Jean, mother in training.

...if she wasn't dead for the mothering bit.

She'd mothered Nate just fine. In the future. Telepathically. It-- Yes.

"How much sugar do you want?" Nate asked, wandering back into the store.

It was very confusing, yes.

"Two spoonfuls?" Jean asked hopefully, bouncing Jan on her hip.

He set the cup down on his desk, dumped in two cubes. "Run into any trouble yet?"

"With Jan?" Jean grinned widely. "Of course not. We're just having girltalk, right?"

"Why does that worry me?" he asked, holding up the cup to her. "I meant in general."

Looking at the cup, Jean bit her lip to take it without using her hands before setting Jan back down. "She'll be very pretty when she's older, I'm sure of it."

"She'll grow up to be a fine woman," Nate agreed. "You didn't answer my question."

"I--when whatever it was last week happened? I broke a mirror on accident."

"With your telekinesis?" he inquired, reaching for Jan.

Jean nodded. "Emma got a bloody nose from whatever that was and I... broke a mirror."

Broke was a bit of an understatement.

"You've got a lot of talent."

Not that Nate didn't already know that. He propped Jan up on the desk. "We suffered some interference."

"Interference?"

"Psychic interference," he clarified. "Sometimes, in times of great stress, the island projects some..." He raised his coffee for a sip.

"Do you get affected by it?"
