Luke's Diner, August 24 (Monday)

The laptop was back out today, and Lacey had finally been able to get the pandas in MyZoo. Lacey had also spent most of the previous day watching a marathon of Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel, which meant that there was a lot of cooing over the Breeding screen.

Because those virtual Facebook animals had really wanted to have facts about their own feeding habits and proximity to extinction related to them by a well-meaning but ditzy coffeeslinger. Really.

Today's Specials
Plum Onion Turkey Sandwich (on honey wheat bread)
Potato Salad
Turkey Meatloaf

Help Wanted -- Please See Manager for Details
Several Shifts Available

Luke's is open, and in no danger of not passing a health department hygiene check (hopefully), since all the animals are virtual. Right.

Well, Bobby didn't have much of a clue how the genetics part worked (he tended to fall asleep in class whenever the Professor got to that part) but he did know about how his powers worked or he thought he did anyway since he hasn't spent enough time around Emma yet. "I make ice," he said quietly at least this time remembering to make sure no one could overhear, grabbing a water glass and touching the water inside with one index finger. Within a moment it was frozen solid.

Kyle watched, eyes widening as the water hardened into ice. "That is so cool."

George snickered at the wordplay though he wasn't sure Kyle meant it. "Tis," he agreed, reaching to touch the outside of the glass. "Freezin' even. Tis a useful trick, aye?"

"It comes in handy," Bobby shrugged, trying for nonchalant.

"Do you need water or can you do it without?"

"Can ye do it th'other way?" George asked. "Ice t'water?"

"Moisture's pretty much everywhere," Bobby explained, "so I can pull it out of the air if I need to. I've never been able to reverse it though. Except when I ice down, though I think that has more to do with bringing my body temperature back up than anything else." Honestly, the coolest (heh) thing about telling Kyle and George was that they were more curious than freaked out, which was definitely a change.

Kyle listened carefully, not sure how it worked, but accepting that it did. "That's almost as good as guns and knives," he decided.

George's brain was already beginning to think of all the hugely interesting ways one could use that talent. Icing locks and a patch of ice just there when someone was following and -

"Even better soemtimes," he said, grinning at Bobby. "Twould be all kinds of useful."

George was going to either be very bad or very good for Bobby, given that most of the time when he used his power 'subtle' wasn't much of a consideration. "I made claws once," Bobby told Kyle. "That was kind of like knives, I guess." Even if Jean thought they were ridiculous. Whatever.

Kyle looked thoughtful. "Could you make it like you were going to throw a baseball and turn the air into ice as it was moving?" Stop asking hard questions, Kyle, no matter how cool they would look.

"Wouldn't weapons of ice be brittle?" George asked, leaning forward with interest. ""Or can ye keep rebuildin' 'em as they go? Is there a limit? Too much usage an' ye end up wit' a reaction headache like a mage?"
longislandiceme: (chilling (not literally))

Re: Mod Your Service

[personal profile] longislandiceme 2009-08-25 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that was a lot of questions. "I can't do the baseball thing. I mean, I could turn water in the air into ice but I can't make it move, technically, unless I made it in my hand and threw it." Then on to George's questions! "The hardness not dirty depends on how densely I pack the ice. The only limit's however much water's around me, which unless we're in the desert isn't usually actually a problem. I've never gotten a headache, though."

"Have you ever had to use it against someone?"

Re: Mod Your Service

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
George was quiet, listening for the answer. It wasn't one he'd've asked. Probably. But the answer was one to know.

The quiet continued on for a few more moments as Bobby figured out how to answer. He finally just went with a simple "Yeah."

"Pretty much," Bobby admitted. "If the wrong people found out about what I can do I'd be in a lot of trouble."

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
George frowned. "Why? Tis a Gift. Tisn't somethin' to be in trouble for or ashamed of. Or don' they like you havin the Gift?"

"They could force him to use it for bad things," Kyle guessed. "Against people." Sounded familiar.

"There are people who think mutants are unnatural. That we should be... wiped out or something, because we're dangerous." Bobby explained. "And, I mean, there are dangerous mutants out there. But my- job sorta? Is trying to stop those who'd use their powers to do bad stuff. So that one day mutants and humans could live together in peace."

Re: Mod Your Service

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, tha's silly," George said. "How could a whole bunch o' people wit' Gifts be dangerous. Can't be holdin' a few against all o' ye."

Re: Mod Your Service

[identity profile] weetinyreese.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)

"That's how the Sentinel Program got started," Bobby said. Oh what the hell, in for a penny, in for a pound, right? And Kyle at least would understand about evil robots. "Some guy decided all mutants were a 'menace' and he built these robots to hunt us down."

Re: Mod Your Service

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Do they be still huntin'?" George asked.

Robots again? WHUT.
