Turtle & Canary [Tuesday, 9/1]

Somehow, a shopping trip had ended with Didi having a job. It seemed like, mortal or not, she couldn't get away from that.

She didn't mind, though. Leaving Turtle's sign in place --

-- she took a Squishie (red had this amazing taste, like chemicals and fruit juice) and passed her time behind the counter, talking to Apu about Hindu gods.

She didn't think he quite believed everything she had to say about Kali, but he seemed to find her a entertaining kind of crazy. That was all Didi expected.

Today's Squishie Flavors: Red, Blue, Purple.

She seems happy to see you.

Hope was out and about, so of course she made a stop at work. Only to see a new girl.

"Hi," she said cheerfully. "I'm Hope, the Friday girl."

"Hi Hope," Didi said, equally cheerfully. "I'm Didi. Are you the personification of Friday, or does that just make me the Tuesday girl?"

"Just makes you the Tuesday girl," Hope said. "Though... what would the personification of a day be like?"

Didi shrugged. She'd met a couple of day-of-the-week gods, but they differed too much to make generalizations.

"It'd depend on the day. Friday would just want to get hammered, Sunday would be religious ... I don't know what Tuesday would be like. What do you think Tuesday would be like?"

"Hm." Hope tilted her head thoughtfully. "Really glad it's not Monday?"

Didi laughed. "And then Monday would be jealous everyone liked Tuesday better. There'd be this whole sibling rivalry thing going on." She played with her hair. "Could get messy."

"Wednesday would be optimistic because it's the middle of the work week and things are almost over, I think."

"And Thursday might just be kind of lost. Everyone always forgets about Thursdays," Didi said.

"You gotta feel sorry for Thursday, really."

"Yeah, I think I kind of do, now," Didi said. "So what brings you into the shop on your day off?"

Hope shrugged. "Just had to pick up a couple things," she said. "Even living in the hotel, you still run out of stuff sometimes."

"How come you live in the hotel?" Didi wondered. "Is it really nice?"

"Man, you work fast. You're already working in the sugar supply center." Jaime was definitely amused.

"First I control the sugar, then I control the island," Didi said. Because she was so clearly the monomaniacal dictator type, as shown by her next sentence.

"Want a free squishie? Purple tastes like frozen cough syrup mixed with ... something I don't know the taste of."

"You are incredibly diabolical," Jaime agreed. "I'd bow to the inevitable and sign up as a henchman, but then you'd probably institute kilts as the uniform."

"And I'd love a Squishy. As long as it's not purple."

"I think you'd like blue," Didi decided, then went over to neatly work the Squishie machine. She was temporarily mesmerized by the way the blue ice spiraled into the cup.

"So ..." she added, once there was a Squishie with a lidded cup on offer to Jaime, "are you offering to be my henchman if there are no kilts involved?"

Considering who exactly she was she found that pretty amusing, yes.

"Blue..." did she do that on purpose? Well, if she did he wasn't going to let that stop him from enjoying an unnaturally colored sugar rush.

After a long tasty slurp Jaime turned his attention to her question. "That'd probably depend on the benifits. Do you offer a comprehensive health plan?"

She might have done it on purpose. It was hard to tell, with Didi.

"You seem like the unnaturally-colored-tongue type," she explained though. "And sure. Excellent health care. Plus dental. All the really good supervillains give dental, right?"

"None of the ones I've met have had dental."

Oh, wait.

"Um, you know, because I've never met any." Smooooooooth, Jaime

"Cute," Didi said, and bent her head to sip her Squishie again. "Hey, roomie, can I kidnap you tomorrow?"

"I should warn you," he smirked, "that my parents are poor, and they refuse to negotiate with kidnappers. But if you don't mind the lack of payout, I'm not doing anything..."

"Well, that ruins my first idea," Didi pouted. "But if you really aren't doing anything, there's a play at the theater -- the Scottish Play. I want to go and you don't suck as company."

"That's about the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me," Jaime laughed. "And, sure, I could probably do with getting out. It'd be fun."

Then, with the stumbling speed born of awkwardness. "This isn't a date, is it? Er... not that that would be a bad thing!"

That was awkward, and it took Didi a second to figure out a diplomatic way to answer.

"I think it's a roommates thing," she said, and her tone was friendly but not especially intimate. "Starting to date right now would just be weird."

Plus there was the whole little mortals-can't-date-the-Endless issue, but bringing that up would make it sound like she wanted to date him. Which ... she didn't not, exactly, but she needed some time to figure things out.

"Oh... good. Er, I mean..." Jaime obviously should have taken a second for a diplomatic answer himself.

"I mean... can we just pretend I wasn't dense enough to ask, and that I'd just said yes?"

Didi smiled, though it was a closed-mouth sort of smile. "Yeah, let's rewind the last thirty seconds and say that. Meet you at the theater?"

"Sure!" He cocked his head. "I'm not really a theater guy, so... should I bring snacks or something?" Jaime looked quite embarrassed to be asking that.

Didi shook her head, glad that little interlude was over. "They sell candy and everything there. Or I could abuse my powers and grab something from the store before I head over Thursday."

"Ooooh, abusing powers..."

"Er... is bad. Yeah, it's bad." Because telling bad jokes would make it easier to forget that little misstep earlier.

"And not good?" Didi offered helpfully. She was wondering where he was going with the bad jokes.

"Yeah, that too."

He frowned. "Do I have to dress up or anything?" He wasn't kidding about the not doing the theater thing.

Didi glanced down at her black tank top and jeans. "I am not wearing anything else. So I say you don't have to. I could draw the eye squiggle thing on you, though."

"I suspect it wouldn't look as good on me," Jaime laughed, relaxing a bit.

"It would be fun to find out," Didi teased. "But I guess I don't really want to fight you for the eyeliner anyhow."

"Maybe next time," Jaime joked.

Which he was probably going to live to regret.

I love the concept of the incarnation of Death working in a general store.
