Turtle & Canary | Tuesday | 9.22

Didi was doing about as well as you'd expect a girl who'd had the details of her menstrual cycle broadcast across the island to do.

Which was to say that, while she was trying to shrug it off, some part of her brain was inventorying ways to hurt the squirrels, Sam and Andy very badly. She'd already come up with 15 interesting new uses for the gum and mints at the register, and you don't want to know what she was thinking about doing with the squishy machine.

Turtle & Canary was open. Squishy flavors: Blue Raspberry, Lime, Red.

Apu is trying to stay between Didi and the customers.

Poor hormonal anthropomorphic personification.

Why, was that a Jonothon, sliding a chocolate bar across the counter toward Didi with one eyebrow quirked upward slightly? Why yes, yes it was.

He might have grabbed one from the vending machines at the dorms before heading out this way, yes. He'd heard the radio broadcast last night, and he understood well enough that sometimes, girls just needed Chocolate, Dammit.

//Morning, luv.//

And if one wanted to get technical, this could probably count as his assignment for Ghanima's religion class, though he wasn't particularly thinking about that. He'd stopped listening to the lecture about the same time he'd noticed there was a spread of food.

Didi gave him a very skeptical look before picking up the candy bar and looking at it as if she'd never seen one before.

"Morning," she said. "...radio, or did you get random ESP?"

She was wishing for random ESP.

//Perhaps I just figured yer might appreciate some chocolate fer no good reason,// Jono replied, coolly.

...

//Radio.//

He couldn't lie to her, dammit.

A tiny smile crossed Didi's face.

"It's said worse things about people," she said, trying hard to keep perspective. "And ... it got you to come visit me. So maybe I'll quit thinking about killing Sam and Andy with a roll of LifeSavers."

Though it was still a fun fantasy, dammit.

//Everybody knows there's no sport in killing people with LifeSavers anyhow, luv,// Jono mused, offering her one of those in-the-eyes smiles of his. //If yer really want to make a game of it, try Skittles instead.//

"Hey Didi," Layla said approaching the counter with an armful of packaged men's underwear. "How are you?"

Didi thought about this as she slowly unwrapped her candy. "But lifesavers have the hole," she argued. "And the ironic name."

//Yes,// Jono replied, //but Skittles are British.//

And clearly, that trumped all else!

"Dealing," Didi said calmly, because that was about the best she could say for her day despite the soothing power of Jono's visit. "Breathing. How are you?"

"... your patriotism is kind of adorable," Didi decided. "Do you need a Union Jack t-shirt?"

"Doing all right," Layla said putting her items down on the counter. "Big project, so I've got lots to do. What exactly are you dealing with?"

It was a unique thing not knowing about somebody. For once Layla couldn't know what was happening with someone's life or what to expect from them.

... of course the girl who knew everything didn't listen to the radio. Why would she have to?

"Oh, you know, life," she said, vaguely. "What project do you need underwear for? Do I want to know?"

//Then I'd match Jenny,// Jono noted. //I think one such shirt is well enough, really.//

Plus, there were entirely too many colours in the Union Jack. All three of them.

"Probably not," Layla smirked as she pulled out a. "Let's just call it a performance art piece. Oh! Almost forgot something."

She ran over to the pharmaceutical aisle and came back later with an OTC sedative.

"Anyway, sorry to hear your not feeling well about life. Anything I can do to help?"

"I worked with her in Dark Arts class," Didi noted. "We figured out the evil cabbages were the ones that wiggled and have mouths."

Totally important academic work, there.

"But yeah, you don't need to follow her lead on style."

... There was something terribly wrong when a cabbage had a mouth and Jonothon didn't.

//I think my own style serves me well enough. Black ~~like my soul~~. Good colour, that.//

Jennifer stepped into Turtle and Canary, checking up on her little sib.

"Hey Didi," Jennifer said. "You, uhhh, doing okay?"

"... I'm going with no," Didi said, eying the addition to the purchases. "Invite me to your show, okay?"

"Sure thing," Layla said with a grin as she pulled out her money for the purchases. "It's actually going to be in the dorm lobby tomorrow morning."

"For relative values of okay, yeah," Didi confirmed wryly. "How are you?"

"Yeah," Jennifer said. "I heard radio. Was more worried about how embarassed you might be."

"And I live in the dorms, so that's perfect," Didi laughed. "You owe ~~handwavey~~."
