Caritas | Saturday

Tino wanted to know where She-Ra was. He was still in need of help dealing with all these parents and friends and...guys in spandex.

"She's flying rounds of the town," Adora said. "The life of a superhero and all. But Adam, Bow, and I are here to help, Tino!"

Tino stared. She was not asking him to talk to the guys in spandex, was she?

"Is there something on my face?" Adora asked, frowning. That man always looked on her so oddly, but still he was a friend.

[Let the cheating continue. Mod Tino.]

"Chuck doesn't bother trying to dupe me much anymore now that we're friends," Sam insisted. Much being the operative word there.

Bart sighed, really hating to have to give this lecture to yet another person. "Chuck doesn't really have friends so much as he has Nathaniel Archibald and people he uses to get things he wants."

"I know it sounds harsh, especially coming from his father, but it's true," Bart continued. "I'd rather be honest about my son's faults than sugarcoat them and get people like you into trouble. More trouble than he's already gotten you into, rather."

"Chuck might not have had friends at home, but he has friends here because some of us are really stubborn, and wore him down to the level of friendship," Sam said. "And I started out, no offense, hating your son, so the fact that I consider him a friend now is kind of a big thing. He really has changed for the better, although a lot of that might not be apparent in the course of a weekend."

"You'd think if he was making such an effort to change, he'd make a bigger effort to prove it to me," Bart said with a frown. Ignore the fact that was what Chuck was totally trying to do yesterday.

"He's been making an effort with those of us who believe he can change," Sam said, with his most innocent smile.

Oh, there was a bitchface. "You don't think I want him to change? Not paying off bail, principals and tabloid photographers would save me both money and headaches."

Two could play the bitchface game, especially when one of the players was Sam. "I think you might not be noticing change unless it's drastic," he said. "If you could have seen how Chuck's been this week, knowing you'd be coming to check on him, you might realize how hard he's been trying."

Bart still didn't believe that in the least. Seventeen years of dealing with Chuck would make you more than cynical towards him. Still, what was bothering him more was the fact that Sam was being so defensive. "Why do you even care?"

Even Nate knew better than to defend Chuck.

"I told you Chuck is my friend," Sam said. "I like seeing my friends get recognized for their efforts, and for trying to be better."

That was fair enough but Bart knew his son and actually felt bad that Chuck had strung Sam along like this.

"You're a nice boy, Sam. And I believe that you genuinely care about Chuck. That's the problem," he said. Bart paused for a moment, not exactly comfortable saying this. "Chuck...let's say he has a talent for letting people down."
likethegun: (i'm betting you can't say no to me)

"You think he's going to screw me over in the end?" Sam asked. "Eventually?"

"I'm not saying he's going to do it on purpose," Bart said. "But it does always seem to happen in the end."

"Well, I don't think he will," Sam said. "I guess only time will tell which one of us is right."

"I guess so," Bart said. "Though I think it's foolish of you. I have about seventeen years more Chuck experience than you do."
