Apu and Kyle weren't on speaking terms. SquishyBot had picked up on the tension and was considerably stressed about it, meaning it wasn't giving out the correct squishy orders.

Hayley had a little box with her as she came into Turtle and Canary today.

"Kyle!" she said, heading over to greet him with an enthusiastic wave with her free hand.

"I got somethin' for ya."

"For me?" Kyle asked, looking a little confused, but happy to see her.

"I made some cookies last night," Hayley said, holding out the box. "They're iced and everything." She smiled at him.

"I did it all myself. I didn't make too much of a mess or anything."

Kyle gratefully accepted the box and took a peek inside. "They smell good. Thanks for thinking of me."

"Well, it seemed like somethin' nice to do," Hayley said. "And I wanted people to know that I'm a nice person, you know?"

"I knew that before the cookies," Kyle replied. "But I'm going to keep them anyway, because I like cookies. People will know you're a nice person if you're not mean to them or don't hurt them. But the cookies help."

"Well, people are startin' to know that I wasn't always," Hayley said. "So I'm trying to head that all off, you know? Stop the rumors before they spread."

"Oh," Kyle said, nodding in understanding. "Everyone's got a history. If anyone does give you a hard time for something you did before you came here, remind yourself that they probably have stuff they're not proud of either."

"That's a good point," Hayley said. "I'm sure everybody's fallen in love with evil criminals at one time or another." She grinned, not even a hint of the gravity of what she said in her light, cheerful voice. "All water under the bridge."

Kyle considered pointing out that that wasn't what he meant, but Hayley got the idea of what he'd been talking about, so he thought it better not to debate semantics. Only he thought of 'debate semantics' as 'starting shit' instead. "What matters now is what you do here and how you treat people now."

"Yeah. I don't hit anyone with anything anymore," Hayley said. "That's not nice, ya know? Even if it can be pretty funny."

She shrugged. "So, do ya like workin' in this place? It seems like it could be a real drag."

She liked to ricochet around her conversations.

"It's okay," Kyle shrugged. "You need money here to live because people don't like it when you take what you need, so it's as good a place as any to work."

"Yeah, that's a good point," Hayley said. "I keep thinkin' I might need a job. I don't really get to buy anything I'd like. And like you said, you're not supposed to just take it."

"Maybe you could ask someone at the music store? You like it in there."

"I don't know if I could make a good sales person," Hayley said. "But I guess I was able to sell you on Elvis, wasn't I?"

She bounced back and forth on her heels. "That's something to think about."

Kyle nodded. "I'm not much of a sales person either, but I sell stuff. People will come to you and you know a lot about music, so you could tell them what to listen to. Or there are other places. What else are you good at?"

Hayley pulled a face, thinking extra hard. "I like to think I can make people laugh," she said. "There's not a circus I can join, right?"

"I don't think so?" He didn't know what a circus was. "But what about the theater?"

"Theater?" Hayley repeated. She thought about that one for a second.

"You really think I could be an actress? Like Marilyn Monroe?" She found the idea flattering.

"Sure, why not? Nothing's stopping you."

"I guess not," Hayley said. "I guess I just never thought I was glamorous enough. But if you think so, well, I guess I can't argue with that. You wouldn't lie to me."

"No, I wouldn't," he agreed. "Then you could act and make people laugh too. I don't know if they pay for that though."

"It'd be fun, though," Hayley said.

She started rocking on her feet, heel to toe and back. "That was a great idea you had. Everybody around here always has great ideas. Maybe I should look into that job thing, too. So I can buy nice things for people."

"Don't forget to buy nice things for yourself too."

"Oh, that I won't forget," Hayley said. "Who ever forgets to take care of themself?" Hayley giggled a little.

"You'd have to be awfully silly to do that."

"You'd be surprised how many people can get caught up worrying about other people so much that they forget about themselves."

"Oh, well, I never have done that," Hayley said.

She had. She did it often, in fact. She just didn't think she did.

"So you don't have to worry. Scout's honor." She held up her fingers in the Boy Scout salute.

"Good," Kyle smiled. "I should probably get back to work before Apu gets angry. Let me know how the job thing goes?"

"Oh, I'll let you know, don't worry," Hayley said. She waved again, this time to say goodbye. "Enjoy the rest of your day, okay?"

"I have cookies now. That's made sure I'll enjoy it."
