Even though Alex's break week had started back on Wednesday, it still felt like it was official once the weekend started. To celebrate, he'd slept late, eaten something unhealthy for breakfast and lazed away the hours (all the while thankfully avoiding any mistletoe while Griff was in the room) until he actually realized he had something planned.

So, having already downed half his beer (he was celebrating, after all), Alex was leaning over the pool table and lining up a shot. It was easy enough but his concentration was off or the table was tilted or something and he flubbed the shot, shaking the cue ball off the side.

That just meant he ended up cursing under his breath and deciding that downing the rest of his beer was a good way to make himself feel better. He had great coping skills.

Alex grinned down at her, making no apologies for his inherent ability to annoy. It was a lost art, one he'd perfected over many years.

"I know that," he confirmed, shrugging easily. "It just makes me more attractive, I think. After all, who can resist all this annoyance in such a pretty package?'

Pretty sure she couldn't. At least, he liked to think not.

So far, she hadn't found a good reason to try resisting him, and at this moment, couldn't think of one. Close enough to his suspicions that she suspected he'd take it, and be insufferably smug if she admitted anything like that.

"Sure you'll find one eventually." ... Okay, maybe there had been some admission, if not outright, in there.

Oh, he'd take it and he was going to take that opportunity right there and push her a little, see if she'd give. If she did, all the better for him. If not, well, he'd still gotten something.

"Maybe I have." He gave that scarf another tug. "Have I?"

"I don't know why you're asking me," she said, glancing down at his hands. Whatever, he was going to be all smug either way. "Already know I'm attracted to you." Like she knew if he'd found anyone who wasn't into that.

Instead of pushing any further, he decided he'd take that little admission (known or not) and let go of her scarf so she could finally get out of it even if the bundled up look was nice.

"Want me to get you something to drink?" he asked, reaching for his almost empty bottle. "Or want the rest of mine?

He was so polite and giving. Holiday season and all.

"Think I'll leave that to you," she said of his beer, finally getting that scarf from around her neck and leaving it on the side of the pool table he'd been using. Warm enough in here, that she didn't really want to be wearing it now.

"Could go for a JD and coke, though." A little more girly, she'd admit, but beer had never been her drink of choice.

"You're missing out," he teased, finishing his beer before pushing away from the pool table to dutifully go get the drinks.

"But, I'll be nice and go get the drinks anyway," he said, handing her his pool cue before brushing past her and towards the snack area.

"See if I can't get them to add an umbrella to yours," he threw over his shoulder with a laugh.

"Better be a pink one," Effy tossed back as he wandered off.

She shook her head, taking the cue to entertain herself with a shot or two while he was gone. If she was going to play, might as well get a warm up in. Wouldn't do to jump straight in while he was there, just in case.

A few minutes later, he did come back with her drink (complete with a pink umbrella) and a drink of his own. His was manlier, that was for definite.

"That afraid of losing?" he asked when he came upon the practicing. "Must think you're really gonna get spanked."

Sort of dirty. Sort of.

Please, this was Alex, there was no doubt in her mind he'd had dirty on the brain when he worded it like that. "Just keeping myself busy," Effy replied, straightening up and moving around towards him.

"Sweet," she remarked, spinning that umbrella idly. "Do follow orders well, don't you?"

He always had dirty on the brain. It was an affliction he gladly lived with. No one had complained yet.

"When I want to," he said, taking a few drinks from his bottle and shrugging. "Why? Think you could use that to your advantage?"

"Think I already have," she noted, grinning and picking her umbrella out before she sipped the drink he'd brought her. Not complaining too much, as cutesy as that umbrella was.

"Yeah, yeah, take advantage of my decent mood," he said, rolling his eyes and reaching to take his pool cue back. "You got lucky."

He settled his bottle so he could rack the balls before leaning his elbows on the table and peering across at her. "Wanna play for stakes or wanna play for fun?"

"Can't be both?" Effy wondered, leaning her own hip against the table to watch him. In her world, stakes were fun.

"Sure it can," he agreed with a nod before circling the table to lean across from her. "Got something in mind that you'd want if you won?"

Effy considered the possibilities a moment, then smirked. "Found out this town has its very own hot tub the other week." Benefits of having very few classes and lots of free time to explore the place.

"I win, you're coming with me." What a hardship that would be. Forced to spend his time with her like that.

Yeah, that didn't sound like such a bad thing to be subjected to. If it wasn't for his pride, he'd even be tempted to throw the damn game.

"Does it?" he asked, nodding approvingly. He hadn't known that but hey, there was nothing bad about hot tubs. "Can't say I've spent much time in any hot tubs. All right. If I win, you cook. For me."

Maybe not as good as a hot tub but it still meant she spent time with him and he got to see just what she could cook.

"Deal." She could pull out something that wasn't cereal and sandwiches when she needed to. This might have to be one of those occasions.

With that, she rounded the table to him, and offered a hand to shake on it. "Maybe we'll actually finish the game this time."

That would be the challenge, wouldn't it? Alex took the offered hand and shook it, sealing the deal and smirking confidently. Really, win or lose, it was a good deal for the both of them.

Funny, a few months ago, he would have tried for something meaner and nastier but not anymore.

"Maybe we will," he said and gave her hand a little squeeze. "Then again, if we don't, sure it'll be for a good reason."

"Usually is." Getting thrown out was a good reason, since it was for a good reason. Or, at least a fun reason. Sure some people wouldn't class that as 'good' exactly.

"You want to break?"

"You're not scared that I'll run the table?" he wondered, keeping that smirk on his face to line up his shot. Yep, he'd break and try and set the tone. Get her back on her heels.

Without waiting for her to answer, he took his shot, sending the cue ball into the pool balls and scattering them quickly. One ball did fall in which meant he got to keep his smirk a little longer.

"Beginning of the end?"

"You wish." Hell if she was showing any fear of losing here, and she leaned casually against the table with her drink to watch his next move.

"...Or maybe you don't. Not a bad deal if you do lose." Probably a better deal, actually, since cooking wasn't exactly a strong point, just something she found herself forced into from time to time.

"I could be happy with seeing you all wet and in a swimsuit," he said honestly, circling the table to find a good shot. "Wouldn't be that hard for me, really. And it's not like you'd get that bad a deal either if I lose."

Still, he wanted to win. Bragging rights were an important advantage to have in their...whatever they were doing.

"I wouldn't have asked for it if it was a bad deal," she pointed out. "Fun for both of us." Because yes, she was still going to imply her winning was inevitable.

"Doesn't mean I'm just gonna roll over," he said and took his shot, potting himself another ball and grinning at his good start. "Who knows, you might actually want to not finish the game so you don't lose."
