It was the weirdest thing -- every time Didi wandered away from the counter to restock or tack Christmas decorations back up, more fruitcake appeared in displays by the cash register.
She ate a slice experimentally, but it still tasted like fruitcake so she didn't go back for seconds. It wasn't her fault the fruit cake glistened a little at her, almost as if...
"It's utterly impossible for baked goods to look sad," she informed Apu. "Right?"
Apu didn't answer. He was busy sweeping back the fruitcake avalanching out of the storage closet.
