Atlas Gym - Tuesday

Rose was in the midst of a serious if mental debate as she worked. For one thing, it distracted her from scrubbing all the stupid corners of the gym where little bits of gross dried mud and jello had ended up. Not to mention the little slicks of oil drops on the wall.

So yes, on one hand, there was really annoying stupid cleaning to be done, but on the other hand, the reason for the intensive clean had given her the opportunity to talk Dimitri into skipping out of Fight Club and finding their way back to his apartment. Which was way more amazing than she'd ever imagined.

The debate wasn't anywhere near being resolved, especially as Rose turned her attention to the the pile of mats that were next on the list to washed down. She made a face then refilled her bucket of soapy water to start on that project. It was amazing how the one time she'd've liked to see Jessi and make her do some of the chores, the annoying pink spandex girl was nowhere to be found. Typical.

"Did you gain an evil stepmother over the weekend?" Edmund asked, leaning as he often did against the nearest stable object. He looked far too amused at the sight of Rose scrubbing away.

Edmund should be watching out for the soapy rag that was coming at his face.

"Since I don't know my dad, that'd be hard," Rose snarked.

Edmund tried to side-step, but Rose was too quick for him and the rag ended up clipping him before dropping to the ground with a soggy slopping sound. "Well that was unnecessary," he said as he tried to brush the water off his shirt. "I only asked because I thought she might have you unfairly doing all of the chores."

And now she was sitting back on the mats and laughing at the wet spot on his shirt. "Nah, it was totally awesome," she said, still grinning. "If I could find the annoying chick who works here, I'd make her do half but then I'd have to listen to her talk. This is probably better."

"The blonde girl?" he asked, nodding as if he knew exactly what she was talking about.

"The blonde that's not Beka or that older chick Ashley, yeah," Rose said. "Jessi wears a lot of pink spandex."

She wouldn't be surprised if Edmund had noticed her. She didn't look bad in the pink spandex. Ho.

"I know the one you mean." Well, yes, pink spandex. It was hard not to notice. "Sometimes it's best to grin and bear the work than cope with your brain melting into something resembling porridge."

Rose smirked a little. It was funny when Edmund knew who she meant. Less so with Dimitri, yeah.

"Have a lot of experience with brain-porridge?" she asked.

"Yes," he said quite simply and far too quickly. "Part of the job at home," he explained, "involves listening to anyone who happens to come along with a matter they want resolved. It often involves disputes. Usually about potatoes."

"Ew," Rose said succinctly. "Are potato farmers extra whiny or do you guys just grow a lot?"

"I wouldn't say that they're all extra whiny, but we do have our fair share of the whiniest in all the land. Keep in mind that they have a few days' travel to get to us even to whine in the first place, so they're fairly dedicated."

She snickered a little at the description. "This? Is why I'd never go into politics. Good thing you're the royal."

"I don't even have the excuse that I was born into it," Edmund admitted. "But every job has its downside. Yours seems to be cleaning mud off the floor."

"This one's temporary," Rose pointed out. "And it's Fight Club's fault. They went crazy and had mud pits and jello and stuff to fight in on Sunday."

"Why would anyone want to practice fighting in mud and jello?"

"Ask Tyler and Miss Atreides," Rose replied. "Cause I have no idea. I mean, I'm reckless, but I'm not that insane." She shrugged. "They cleaned up and stuff, but Dimitri's picky about his gym. And everything else."

Which she usually liked, yes.

Edmund tried to hide his smile. "Do I detect a hint of an issue with his pickiness?"

She made a face at the smile and hefted another rag threateningly. "Let's just say that some things are overkill, huh?"

"I have an older brother. I know exactly what you mean."

Rose opened her mouth, torn between laughing and being creeped out by the comparison. "Yeah," she managed finally. "Like that."

"There are certain people in our lives who'll never stop being picky, and yet we can't do without them." Look at him, being all philosophical.

"Look at you, sounding like a book," she teased. Even if she kinda liked the sentiment.

"Yes, well, they're lucky we put up with them and their nonsense," Edmund said quickly.

"Cause seriously, what would they do without us?" Rose agreed. "They'd be totally lost."

"Wouldn't even be able to tie their own boot laces," Edmund agreed. "Or have clean floors, in your case." Again with the amusement.
