Sure the temperature outside was finally dropping below eighty, but within Atlas Gym, the heat was building.

There was no music.

There was no air conditioning.

There was only a hot and sweaty Russian who had spent the morning dragging old, dust-covered fans out of storage and setting them up to provide some relief to the Jazzercise participants who were literally going to be sweating to whatever oldies they could sing today.

Dimitri propped the doors to the gym open, hoping for a little natural air circulation while he went through his own workout, shirt getting heavy with perspiration. What? Like he was going to just hang out because of a little heat.

Atlas Gym was open for business!

"Only third?" Call Dimitri curious. "What are first and second?" Maybe he could be distracted away from the horror of Jessi hooking up with Yuri.

"...yeah, only third," Rose said, giving him a weird look. "Like it could be worse than -" she shrugged. "It's not like it isn't totally obvious what the first two would be."

Dimitri met her eyes and understood that she wasn't just talking about training scenarios and made an attempt to diffuse that. "Jessi as a guardian and your assigned mentor?"

"I hate you so much," she bitched. "That's - holy crap. How about Jessi as your student?"

It was Dimitri's turn to smirk, "Think she'd listen better than you?"

Rose glared at him, her lips quirking a little as she tried not to laugh. "Yup. I can let her know you're accepting new ones."

"Great," he deadpanned. "You can pick up her Tae Bo classes in the trade."

"You'll suffer more than I will," she pointed out.

"It wouldn't last," Dimitri reasoned. "I'd call up Fialkovskii first." Because even Dimitri had his limits.

"I hear that Guardian Petrov isn't one to change her mind once she makes it up," Rose said, smirking a little as she threw his words back at him.

"You overheard things you shouldn't have," he answered with a little shake of his head.

Rose shrugged a little, still amused. "Like you didn't know I was listening."

"I knew, but that doesn't mean I wanted you to hear," Dimitri told her. He'd even lowered his voice during the conversation in hopes she'd get the hint.

"Shouldn't have taught me to pay attention then," she shot back.

He crossed his arms and looked down at her. "I failed to realize that lesson had taken."

Rose glanced up at him, far too amused. "Like that's my fault? I thought you paid attention to this stuff."

"So somehow I failed to pay attention while teaching you to pay attention? I'm sensing a breakdown of logic here," Dimitri decided, lips pressing into a line to avoid smiling at her when it was not deserved.

"Again with it not being my fault," she teased, totally seeing that bit of amusement. "If you don't want me to listen, you should have your totally important conversations away from the campfire."

"It wasn't an important conversation," he told her. "But next time, I'll be sure to keep my distance."

Rose rolled her eyes. "Whatever. It was a joke, God."

"What I said that night wasn't a joke." Dimitri frowned, trying to make himself understood. "It wasn't important because it was a conversation that never should have happened."

"I know that," Rose said, frowning back a little. "I was joking. About the listening thing. I know you're not going to leave to go back to St Vlad's or anything."

"So we understand each other," he said with a nod. Sometimes just ensuring things were said was enough of a problem for him that Dimitri was glad for this odd discussion of theirs.

Rose twisted her lips a little, uncertain exactly how they'd ended up in this conversational morass. "Only if you're still cool with me mocking about Jessi and Yuri sitting in a tree."

Dimitri had no control over the sparkle in his eyes when he replied, "Because me being not cool would ever stop you from mocking, Rose?"
