Fast Eddie's, Friday Evening

The staff at Fast Eddie's wasn't exactly thrilled to be hosting a student's birthday party tonight. Kids at birthday parties tended to hang decorations everywhere, order either too much cheap beer or none at all, and generally make a mess. The were too cool for that: They worked at a pool hall, not a Chuck E Cheese's.

Sure enough, when Tara came in to set up, she promptly began taping crepe paper and balloons in bright primary colors to everything as the staff watched with annoyed but tolerant looks on their faces.

Tara ignored their expressions. She needed Kennedy's birthday party to be nice. And, once the decorations were up, she was certain it would be. She just needed to wait for everyone else to get there.

Get there, hang out, or grab a bite from the tables of snack foods. It's mostly things like subs, chips and nachos, but there's a lot of moddable variety.

Tara was still fussing over the arrangement on the food table as it was almost time for guests to start arriving. She was half giddy, half primed for disaster at any moment.

And Tara had put the whole thing together.

It didn't make him look any less out of place, but at least he had nachos to focus on.

After dropping the cake down on the table--not literally!--Karla immediately beelined for the food. It had been a long day of cake-hunting and she needed to refuel.

Beka wouldn't miss this celebration. Even if she'd had a choice in the matter, she was there. For a while she was distracted, trying to figure out what the strange lanes were for.

Jonas had only met Kennedy once but she'd been nice to him and he found he enjoyed birthday parties so he'd come down to this one, small gift in hand. Once he'd set that down, he got himself something to eat and wandered around idly.

Zack had spoken with Kennedy maybe a handful of times, which meant, in Zack-land, that she was clearly one of his best friends ever.

It helped that they were both heading the reserves together, and that he thought she was pretty awesome, so there.

And that was why he was hanging around with a plateful of potato chips and a grin on his face. Party! Woo!

After stopping by a common room briefly, Sookie made her way to the party. She'd even eventually found a present, so she was sort of proud of that. But she found a spot to sit near the wall and watch people.

Kennedy was going to be all over the place tonight, ricocheting between the food, the pool tables, the bowling lanes (she could make the stupid shoes look awesome, thank you very much), the video games, and the people with her usual full-throttle energy. If you happened to be within earshot of her at any point? You could probably talk to her.

Now 24th century technology is good but some other force must have been in play as there was a shimmery light and where there had been an empty spot on the gift table there was now a package and a note.

The note simply said :

Kennedy,

I hope this note finds you well. Please accept this gift and good tidings on your birthday.

Inside the rather heavy and neatly wrapped package was a brand spanking new bat'leth that should make any slayer a happy camper.

Tara had suggested something from home, but there hadn't been enough time to send home for something special. So she'd compromised: two bottles of honey-pear cordial and a a little something extra she'd found online.

She'd gotten it yesterday and handwavily tried it out at the range. In the interests of making sure it worked, of course.

Jonas set his gift (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/753d/) down, bad wrap job and all. He didn't know what Kennedy really wanted but this had looked fun when he'd seen it. And he thought it might be useful for those more crazy nights.

Sookie had thought for a long time, and then the answer had seemed to be staring her in the face.

So she left a basket (http://www.adorablegiftbaskets.com/stress-relief-gift.htm) for Kennedy (from her -- it seemed kinder than some ice for Kennedy to perhaps chew on in order to relieve tension at times), along with a few sillier (http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/accessories/96b3/) things (http://www.amazon.com/Gloomy-Bear-Purple-Vampire-Plush/dp/B002TNAZVA) that Bobby had helped with a bit.

Raven wasn't sure what someone like Kennedy would like -- well, she had a few ideas, but they weren't anything that she would consider getting for someone. So she settled on something from 'Dite's shop that she thought Kennedy might find useful if she ever got banged up fighting.

And lo, there was a cake:




It was a hazelnut/mocha bar cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. The letters and ribbon were made of colored chocolate ganache and not fondant, because it's fairly gross.
