Military Reserves, Wellspring Arms Shooting Range, Tuesday Afternoon
For the first time, it was Jak who took the first talking shift. "Hey, guys. We're in the shooting range for a reason," he said, nodding at the... well, the scenery behind him. "Some of you probably haven't used a gun before. Some of you haven't had enough practice. So we're getting some practice in today. If you don't know what you're doing, me and Triela are going to give a demonstration." This was probably the wordiest anyone was ever going to see him, so, y'know. "Practice safety in the range. Don't keep your finger over the trigger. Remember that firing any gun is going to give you some recoil, so brace yourself."
He squared his shoulders. "But I'm sure Triela'll give you the run through," he finished. "Anyway, you've got your short range," point at the shotgun, "Your long range," at which he held up his Morph Gun, blaster attachment attached, "Snipers, handguns, semi-automatics, automatics..." He trailed off. "Lots of guns." You know. To keep things simple.
Kennedy was mostly keeping her mouth shut on this one, guns and slayage not being particularly compatible activities in her experience; for today, she'd mostly be standing there looking serious, kind of daring anyone in the group to goof off so she could get up in their face about it.
Zack, on the other hand, was going to keep his mouth shut, stand there looking serious, and occasionally crack a little smile as he looked around the group. He liked people! He couldn't help it!
"Please, be sure to pay careful attention to everything you're shown today, if you're planning on handling any of the guns," he stated. "I probably don't have to tell you that, because most of you guys have a healthy respect for most weaponry, but it's important enough that it's worth stating. I'll have to give you stern looks and a lecture or something if any of you get hurt."

Kurt focused on the cookie-ness of the cookies, and the minglitude of the mingle time, and not, say, the scary weapons they were about to touch. He didn't really like guns.

Demonstration!
Re: Demonstration! - Jak
Words like 'versatile' weren't in his vocabulary, but just pretend he used it.
"This is the Blaster barrel," he said, holding up a yellow, round object. He pressed it into place on the Morph Gun, and suddenly it extended, becoming a lot more gunlike in shape with a yellow bent to it.
Just go with it."It's good for the long range. So."He poked at the barrel. "Check nothing's in it," he said, "Plant your feet like you belong here," which he did, settling into firing stance, "Keep your finger off the trigger until you've got your aim just right..."
He squeezed.
A yellow bolt shot out of the weapon and struck the target in the center, leaving behind a neat little scorched hole. "And you've got a dead guy." He yanked off the yellow barrel. "Then there's Scatter, which is a lot like a shotgun. Close range, lots of splash. Uh... Vulcan, which is like a semi. It'll blast out a lot of bullets fast, but it isn't always too accurate."
And then there was the Peacemaker. Which Jak desperately wanted, but alas. Anyway.
Re: Demonstration!
"Guns are for killing people, and they're very good at it. The wide variety of them can be explained primarily by the fact that different designs excel in different areas."
She held up a pistol. "Pistols are small. This makes them both easy to conceal and easy to maneuver with. You don't have to turn your entire body to aim one, just point your arm in the correct direction. Their small size makes them weak, but only comparison with other guns. They're plenty dangerous all by themselves." She turned down range and emptied a clip.
Next she moved on to a sub-machine gun. "Sub-machine guns, or SMGs, are too large to conceal easily, but they remain small enough to be easily maneuverable. They usually use the same ammunition as pistols, but their longer barrels mean that they hit harder at longer range. They also have larger magazines so that they can carry more ammunition, and many of them have automatic settings for extremely fast firing." This time when she turned downrange she simply held the trigger back, unloading thirty rounds in a handful of seconds.
"This is a combat rifle," Triela said, holding one up. "You've probably seen them in movies and such. As you can see they're much bulkier than either pistols or SMGs, and that means that they're harder to maneuver with. Since you need both hands to hold them, and they're relatively heavy, you have to swing your entire torso to line up a shot. The trade off is that they have much longer range and power than either of the previous two types. This is due, in large part, to the fact that rifles use much heavier rounds and deliver the bullets at much higher speeds." The rifle was much louder as the bullets created little sonic booms as they headed downrange.
"And finally, the sniper rifle." Triela hefted one with one hand, which was no easy feat for the non-cybernetically-enhanced. "The most common of these use a very heavy standard rifle bullet, but have much longer barrels to extend range, power, and accuracy. Some heavier sniper rifles use customized bullets that are intended to take out targets at extremely long range. You'll notice that this is far too bulky to run around with. But the range it allows for is so long that you shouldn't need to swing it around to retarget anyway." Triela lifted the rifle to her shoulder, sighted, and pulled the trigger. Even her enhanced body rocked back under the force of the recoil.
Putting down the sniper rifle, Triela looked around thoughtfully.
"Any questions?"
Try the Range
1. Always treat the gun as loaded.
2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
3. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
4. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.
5. Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.
6. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
7. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using.
8. Always use proper Ammunition.
9. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting.
10. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun.
11. Don't rely on the gun's safety to keep it from firing.
12. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything.
Re: Try the Range
Hmm, just off center.
Re: Try the Range
If not for her Jedi reflexes, she would've staggered back pretty badly, and as it was her first few rounds were further off the mark than she'd have liked. Nope, still not a fan of projectile-based firearms.
She opted to give a sniper rifle a try after that, if only because what little experience she'd had with them was a few minutes grabbed here and there with some of Page's commandos on that last infiltration of Coruscant. Her aim was decent enough that she might be passable at this with some work, but . . . well, she doubted she had the temperament for it, and the Yuuzhan Vong warrior in her found the entire concept somewhat dishonorable.
She was working on that part.
Re: Try the Range
Kurt nervously picked up a small pistol and examined it like he was afraid it would go off.
Re: Try the Range
Whatever.
Talk to the Guys
Re: Talk to the Guys
He might have been spending most of his time at the range.
Re: Talk to the Guys
... The best that he was coming up with involved honor and dreams. Shocking.
Re: Talk to the Guys
And feeling really tiny in the Mayor's presence. Whoa.
Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
That point would involve him being present, so there he was.
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
Zack looked maybe a little impressed as he walked up to the mayor with a nod hello.
"Thanks for letting us do this," he began. "This will go a long way in seeing to it that people don't get caught off-guard in a bad situation with a weapon they're not familiar with."
Zack didn't think that he'd ever need to fire a gun, nah. Not with that sword of his. But, you know. Other people.
[For great SP? I kinda had to. HI CABLE.]
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
the young puppyZack with a thoughtful expression. "And I've wanted to see the reserves at work..."He'd trained his own bunch of angry youngsters back in his time. The fact they hadn't blown each other up in a year's worth of being a militia was interesting enough.
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
"We're all in this for the same reason," he replied. "Or, well, a lot of reasons that kind of add up to the same one. We like it here. We don't want some crazy invasion to get the better of us. It's kind of like the closest thing to home that some of us have, you know?"
A pause. "Any thoughts on what you can see so far? It's... maybe a little less formal since Arthur left, but people are still coming, so I think we're not completely messing it up."
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
He considered the people gathered. "I'd say putting in a little more structure wouldn't hurt. Starting off with a few simple fighting drills never damaged unit cohesion - at the same time, you might want to think about staging a surprise attack."
Beat.
"If you clear it through the Mayor's office first, of course."
They didn't need anyone's defense systems kicking in unneeded.
Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
"A surprise attack, huh? Like, in the middle of the week, sometime the meeting isn't actually happening, or more like we get halfway through explaining the topic for the day and then Wham! Attackers!"
.... He got a little excited over this sort of thing. Excuse him.

Re: Talk to the ... Big Loomy Figure
"And using it for something like that wouldn't be very different from the way the training room back home works," he admitted. "Honestly, I'm kinda disappointed that I didn't think of it myself."
