The Perk [Friday afternoon]

Jaime didn't really need (more) coffee at the moment, but he was at the Perk anyway. With all the weirdness around Fandom he'd learned to tune out the Scarab's near-constant low-grade series of alerts. Because even acknowledging them all would be a full-time job.

Which was Jaime's current excuse for not having picked up on the innocuous little warning of 'previous bearer (deceased) detected'. Not that he knew that was his excuse due to the still not having picked up on things, but still.

It was going to be a really good excuse when he needed to bust it out. Really.

Dinah came back with two coffees, and slid into the seat opposite Jaime, beaming at him. "So, isn't he awesome?" She could have been talking to either of them. "Dad's here 'til Saturday. We're going out on the motorcycle pretty soon."

Larry smiled at Dinah. Happy to see her or agreeing with her about Jamie being awesome? Only Larry knew for sure. "That will be fun. Even if we have to stay on the island. I'm not sure I'm ready to see you go full throttle on the highway. That would give me a heart attack."

"Just on the Causeway? Or in to Baltimore and back?" Dinah wheedled, looking hopeful. "I can't actually ride the bike on the island. No motorized transport. Which blows! I could so get some good jumps in on the downhills here!"

"Small problem. I can't leave the island," Larry explained with a frown. "I'm not sure about the causeway and I wouldn't want to risk cutting my time short by doing something wrong. But I can watch you Dinah."

"Oh," Dinah said, crestfallen. Then she rallied. "No, definitely not cutting time short." She shot Jaime a glance, then looked back at Larry. Thinking of not getting to learn to ride a bike with her dad, or a lot of other things. "So yeah, you can see me ride my 'cycle. Jaime and I go into Baltimore, sometimes. We're supposed to take a road trip to El Paso later this summer."

"Which is coming up soon," Larry pointed out. "You'd better start making plans."

"Daaaad," Dinah said, gleeful in being able to do so. "We will. Haven't you ever heard of spontaneity?" She smiled, giddy again. "Want to join us for lunch tomorrow, maybe?" She tilted her head to look at Jaime. "No one visiting you?"

She wasn't going to directly ask about Nadia, but....

Larry glanced from Jamie to Dinah and back, wondering if this was a good or bad thing. He'd have to ask Dinah later.

"Lunch would nice. Maybe a good burger? And maybe a beer?"

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2010-07-17 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Plan! We have a plan." Dinah leaned over to give Jaime a kiss on the cheek, partly for comfort, even if he didn't need it, and partly because... well, her dad was sitting there. And Helena would've made gagging noises. "See you in the morning?"

She had a dad! A dad to go play with!

"Good. I'm looking forward to it," Larry smiled. "But for now, there's a motorcycle to check out."

Someone who was paying attention might notice a woman outside the Perk after Larry and Dinah left, stopped in front of the shop. Just watching them walk down the street from behind her sunglasses.

Tourists were everywhere this weekend, though.
