Caritas; Thursday Evening

Almost a week had passed and Chuck still wasn't feeling any better about the situation he had been put in. He was dealing, but he knew he had to get over this brooding thing soon, or at least learn to cover it. He hated people hovering over him and, let's face it, the emo thing was annoying, even to him.

He settled down behind the bar with a bottle of scotch, figuring that was a step in the right direction to get him in a better mood.

"Seems like an excellent reason to drink to me," Chuck said, sliding over a vodka tonic. "How long are you going to be gone?"

"I'm thinking about a week, Fandom time," she said with a thank you as she took the drink. "So, consider this me calling out to Tino that he's taking Saturday's shift."

"Duly noted," Chuck said with a nod. "I probably won't tell him you won't be there. I think it's funnier when he has to handle a shift with no warning."

Jaina grinned, taking a drink. "And who knows, laughs at Tino's expense might make your week slightly better?" She had no idea, but one could hope.

"Making Tino miserable does bring me great joy," he agreed. "It's not like he doesn't deserve it because, let's face it, the guy's kind of a jerk."

"Yes. And you've hopefully never walked in on one of his non-clothing nights." Shudder.

Chuck made a grossed out face. "What the hell goes on here when I'm not around?"

"I make Tino put his clothes back on, that's what." She paused, thinking that over. "Pretend that didn't sound wrong."

"I'm blocking out anything that involves Tino and no clothes, don't worry," he told her. "I don't need that kind of trauma."

"I wish I could," Jaina frowned. "My fault for putting the mental image in my own head."

"Drinking more might help," Chuck said. That's what he was planning on doing, anyway.

"Yeah, that won't be a problem," she said, and looked at her half-empty glass. "Apparently it's going to be one of those nights?"

Chuck was never not going to be surprised hearing Jaina talk like that, but he couldn't deny that he wanted the company. "There's nothing wrong with that. And, hey, you're not having one of those nights alone."

"Yeah, I noticed," she said, finishing the drink in a show of solidarity. "Is this the kind of week where everything sorts itself out when the bottle's done, or should I worry?"

"It's...it's something I'm going to have to deal with for the rest of my life," Chuck said, holding out his hand so he could take Jaina's glass for a re-fill. "But I'm dealing with it. So, no, you don't have to worry."

She handed over the glass, realizing she'd probably worry anyway. "Sorry you have to deal with it," she said anyway.

"Thanks," he said, smiling a little as he mixed another vodka tonic. "I could tell you what happened, but you'll need to keep in mind that I'm perfectly aware of how much of a soap opera storyline it sounds like."

"You haven't heard my family history," she said dryly. "I can deal with a soap opera storyline."

"Fair enough," he said, sliding over her second drink. "Okay, so, last week with all the dead people? My dad showed up. Which was nice, believe me. But he revealed that my mother, whom I have thought was dead my whole life, is actually alive."

Chuck knew he could have made that sound a whole lot more dramatic, but he just didn't have the energy or the mind power at the moment to be all Serena about the situation.

"The bottle makes more sense now," she said, wincing. "Are you going to get in touch with her?"

"No, I'm not," Chuck said firmly. It had been what he was thinking about most of the week. "She had wanted to put me up for adoption, and when my father decided he wanted to keep me, she left the country. I doubt she's changed her mind over the last eighteen years."

And if she had, Chuck would naturally think she was after his money.

"I don't get why people do those kinds of things to their kids," she said, shaking her head. She'd thought it was bad enough that her mom just was too busy with saving the galaxy to raise her. "It's her loss."

Chuck smiled again. "Thanks. Like I said, I'm getting over it. You have nothing to worry about. And even if there was something to worry about, the Winchesters have the hovering thing covered while you're gone."

"I don't hover," Jaina protested, smiling. "I ask into things casually."

"Riiiiight," Chuck said. "Word it any way you want, it boils down to hovering."

Not that he minded it when people hovered anymore. Better than being ignored.
