Caritas | Wednesday

Despite being on the island for awhile now, Percy hadn't ever been down to Caritas. Of course, the day he decided to solve that was the day that, apparently, the regular bartender decided not to show up.

Percy took a spot on one of the stools, nursing a water and thinking while the other bartender stared at him. And stared. And kept staring. Maybe that's what Luke felt like when Percy got into one of his staring modes.

Eventually, Percy called the guy on the staring and Tino, being Tino, tossed a dish rag at him and gestured him behind the bar. Tino was a man of few words and Percy, being Percy, argued a some before just giving up and coming back behind the bar.

It wasn't like he had anything better to do and he'd never done this. The zombies didn't even phase him. Tino, however, was a little creepy.

Kitty didn't know exactly why she was out tonight, except that the common room didn't hold a lot of interest today and besides, when you'd run away from a mummy in class, hanging at the place with the zombies wasn't so bad.

She did a bit of a double take when she saw who was behind the bar, though. "New job?"

Kitty came over to take a seat, resting her forearms on the bar. "And how's that going?" she asked, a little amused.

"If that's you're goal, then you're doing great," Kitty assured him with a smile. "So if I like ask for a water, does that mean you'll actually get it?"

"How about bottled poured into a glass?" she asked. "Make it like a challenge."

Kitty studied the water, inspecting it. "Very good," she said. "But it could use an umbrella."

"I have no idea, I've just seen them on TV and I think an umbrella might go with like everything." And she wanted an umbrella.

"Theeeeeen... You owe me one at a later date," she decided.

"I see you survived the mummy," Bruce said.

"I did!" Kitty said with a smile. "I mean, sure, it was just a simulation and all, but I was like, really in fear for a while there."

"Really? I didn't think it was that bad," Bruce said.

"I was kidding," she assured him. "Simulations aren't a big deal or anything. They might look scary, but they like... end."

"And they can't hurt you anyway," Bruce said. "Unless something goes horribly wrong."

"Exactly. Plus there weren't even like lasers or anything," she said with a dismissive hand wave. "Kids' stuff."

"Are you talking about lasers in general or lasers in Ancient Egypt?" Bruce asked. "Either way, I think your world is pretty different from mine."

"You don't have lasers in your world?" she said, semi-evasively.

"Only for reading and writing information, eye surgery, high intensity cutting, that kind of thing," Bruce said. "But definitely not in ancient Egypt."

"I think that's the first time I've ever heard 'high intensity cutting' spoken," she realized. "Like ever."

Bruce felt inspired by the exercise he got in class this morning and decided to branch out by taking another run around the island in the evening. On his third lap, he figured he could stop by the bar and see if there was anything interesting happening.

A new bartender was mildly interesting.

Bruce ordered a ginger ale from Tino and settled in for a quiet night at the bar.
