Caritas | Wednesday
Why break a routine, right? Nathan made it three weeks in a row in the bar on a Wednesday and three weeks in a row, he ended up behind the bar when Tino's regular bartender didn't show up again. Nathan was beginning to think this guy was on sabbatical or some shit. Or maybe he was mad at Tino.
No matter, Nathan grabbed a bottle of Irish whiskey and set it up on the bar, pouring himself a glass and downing it quickly. He wasn't thinking of the bitchy fight he'd had with Kate earlier or any of the other million weird and complicated things that had happened to him lately.
Nope, he was a man who had liquor and that would erase all those thoughts he didn't want to have right now. Okay, maybe those thoughts were sticking around but Nathan was ignoring that fact. He was toasting the band and toasting Tino and toasting Tino's attempts at singing with the band.

"Tell me anything you'd like to tell me," he said, slapping the bar and nodding. At this point, he wasn't picky. "Tell me a secret or tell me something amazing or tell me something dirty or tell me something you think I should know."
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"Hmm..." Or she was going to spend a while adding to her blood alcohol level while she considered what to share. "But you already know my really good secret," Caroline complained. "Which I am super amazing at keeping - oh you should know that! I am a fantastic keeper of secrets! Um, even if I told you." She was incapable of keeping a secret, actually.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"I don't have any secrets," Nathan said, shrugging a shoulder. He really didn't, not yet. He was sort of an open book, what you see is what you get unless you counted some...certain feelings and shit. He wasn't counting those.
"C'mon, tell me something else," he encouraged, reaching for the glass so he could get something to drink and she could find something to tell him. "Something interesting. Something good."

Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"I did not know your dad played for the other team," Nathan remarked, carefully enunciating the words so he wouldn't start slurring or something embarrassing. "Not that I care or anything, it's just totally new information. My dad's a dick and your dad, well..."
Did he have to fill in the blank there? If it helped, he did start laughing at his unintentional but hilarious turn of phrase.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"How'd shit get bad between you and your mom?" Nathan wondered because that seemed like the logical (yet dangerous) question. "Were you one of those divorce kids who gets stuck in the middle and used as a fucking rope in a game of parental tug of war until you're so scarred that you need therapy for fucking years and the only thing that gets you through the day is copious amounts of drugs? Drugs are awesome for coping. I should know."
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Not that Caroline was ever going to be self-aware enough to realize this.
"Dad moved out of town and I stayed in Mystic Falls. Better to be with friends, right? Though I had to leave everyone for Fandom." That still kind of sucked when she thought about it.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"I could yell at your mom for you," he offered, proving that he was drunk. Hey, he'd picked fights with law enforcement before, he'd do it again. "It's not like she has fucking jurisdiction over me, I'm Irish."
That didn't matter. "I could yell at her for being a blind self centered bad mother who should join my fucking dick of a father in the corner for making the lives of their kids utter shit sometimes. I'd do it. I would."
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Oh Caroline.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Yes, that was a loaded question, Caroline. Tread carefully.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"Fringe benefit?" Nathan repeated, trying to find a question in there that would get him more information on her ways of thinking. "All right, so what are the main benefits since it seems like you've...categorized this already? Please, share with me your seemingly deep thoughts and impressions of what we did the other day."
And maybe he wanted to know what she thought since he'd been the big sharer that day. She'd just gone along with that and lectured him. Hmm.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"Yeah, for me too," he answered, nodding in what he hoped was a decisive manner. "Kissing's one of those things that can be good with just about anyone that knows what they're doing. After all, you only need a tongue, lips, and motivation."
Nathan didn't know why he'd asked that question and suddenly wondered if he could wreck it all and make her forget he'd asked. "Guess you'll be ready for when your next, better offer comes along, yeah?"
Maybe he hadn't forgot that little line yet.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"You finished our drink so I'm going to spin now," she informed him, kicking off the other stool and turning hers around and around.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"Well, you know, I happen to think I'm top of the fucking tier with the only better option being God because if you created the fucking world, you've gotta have some talent but hey, I'll be sure to tell you all about my better offer when it comes along. Maybe we can compare notes! Hey, there's a thought!"
Really, Nathan wondered if she'd even process his words what with her drunkenness.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"I'm dumb?" he repeated, tilting his head and deciding to indulge her on this one. Maybe she'd say something hilarious. "Why am I dumb? I think I'm rather intelligent and clever, really. I'm just on a level of intelligence most people cannot attain. So, what makes me dumb right now, Caroline?"
Nathan knew he was a dumbass but he wasn't just going to outright admit that. Not a chance.
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
There was no way he was letting her walk home drunkenly. It was one of the few chivalrous things he'd do for one of the few people that actually mattered to him.
"And do you wanna kiss me?" Nathan asked curiously. "You know, you've never actually said one way or another. You kissed me once to thank me and then lectured me when I said I wanted to kiss you. Not really giving off any specific vibe either time, Caroline. How's a bloke not supposed to be confused?"
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"Do you want to sleep on the beach, Caroline?" Nathan asked her, amused despite himself. He still didn't feel all that dumb about this because she still hadn't really admitted anything he didn't know. "I didn't think you'd really be one for getting sand in your pants and having the inevitable thigh chafing that goes along with it. And what if you woke up with sand in your mouth? Sounds delicious, doesn't it?"
It hadn't been a beach but Nathan sure had woken up in some weird places with sand in his mouth. "And I don't think you want to kiss me, Caroline. You can't admit it so I think it's all just a ruse. Maybe you just wanted a pair of warm lips."
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
Re: The Bar [Caritas 02/16]
"You keep calling me a dummy," he pointed out, sliding their glass back a little and using the bar to hold himself up. His legs were like fucking jelly right now. That didn't stop him from leaning closer to her and slapping on a grin. "But, I'm the one who knows what he wants and you don't."
He punctuated that by poking her chest once. "Cuz, I told you I wanted to kiss you a few days ago. That's not a surprise anymore. I know what I want."
