The Causeway | Morning | Sunday | February 20

It was just about time to depart for the annual Fandom High Spring Break trip. Portals had been called, arrangements had been made and now all the group had to do was wait for the scheduled portals to appear.

The causeway was a mess of students and adults, carrying bags and talking excitedly about whatever plans the might have for the upcoming week. It was chilly in Fandom but the group was about to head to the sunny shores of Hawaii. Hope you packed your sunscreen!

[This is the general HAI WE ARE GOING TO HAWAII POST YAY. Feel free to ping on in, talk to each other, be excited, etc. Up early for maaaaaaaaximum slowplay!]

"Not at all," Rilla admitted. "I had to look on a map to even discover where Hawaii was. It's terribly far from where I'm used to being."

"Are you from another planet too?" Sov asked. "And I looked it up too. It's supposed to be really hot weather there."

Rilla shook her head. "No, I'm from Canada. It's the nation to the north of this one. Where are you from?"

"The planet of Gethen. No one here has heard of it," Sov replied. "I have never heard of Canada, though."

"Neither have many Americans," Rilla replied a little dryly. "It's lovely there, if a bit cooler than here. What is Gethen like?"

"Cold!" Sov laughed. "Compared to here. So I think I wouldn't mind 'a little cooler'. We have an ice age."

"Despite what some might say about the Western parts of Canada, we're not that cold," Rilla said with a laugh. "So you feel quite at home with blizzards and ice, then?"

"Yes," Sov replied cheerfully. "Which doesn't mean I prefer being out in a storm to sitting in front of a warm fire."

Rilla beamed at him. "It means you have a greater appreciation for just how cozy a fire can be. Do you like to read in front of it, or tell stories?"

The student couldn't be that alien if they also liked reading.

"I read sometimes," Sov said, "But I prefer listening to stories being told. I mean, when someone tells them, that's really special. I listen to the radio a lot too, and they broadcast all the old stories and new ones too."

The topic was clearly important to Sov too.

"One of my favourite summer activities is when they light a bonfire at home with all of the summer grasses and the old sea captains sit around and swap tales," Rilla replied dreamily. "I'm Rilla Blythe, by the way."
