Groovy Tunes; Sunday [ 03/20 ].

Ariel knew she had been slacking off on...well, a lot of things, but today, when she came in to work at the music store, she was determined to get back on track in her discovering music alphabetically and backwards. Y would be an interesting one, but she would up settling on something really amazing!

As fun as the choice for Z had been, Ariel was pretty sure she almost enjoyed dancing to this even more. It was definitely the sort of song, however, that made her wish she had a dance partner.

Until one showed up, she supposed she'd just have to settle for a Justin Beiber cardboard cut-out thing.

//Dear lord.//

Jonothon had wanted to check up on Ariel, since he hadn't really had a chance to do so since she'd taken the job, and so he swung by as soon as his own shift at the library had let out.

He was now regretting that.

//Wot is that thing?//

He was staring in horror at the Bieber, yes.

"I found him under the counter!" Ariel offered by way of cheerful explanation as the Bieber 'twirled' her and so threw her arms up in a sort of pose to finish out the dance in way. She grinned over at Jono, and shrugged. "He was still all folded up and in a package, and I didn't even know what it was until I opened it. I hope you don't mind; I really wanted to know what it was and I needed a dancing partner, besides."

//No, I don't... mind...//

Actually, he was somewhat horrified. He'd missed his last shift here, spent recovering from a hectic weekend, and all. And so it stood to reason that anything could have made it into the building with the usual shipments. But to come in to realize that he'd been invaded by prepubescent Canadians like this...

//I imagine he dances better than he sings, at least.//

"Oh, he's a singer?" Ariel asked, eyes lighting up because Jono just had to go and do that, didn't he?

"Where are his CDs? Let's put one on!" And then she had to giggle a little. "Maybe he'll dance better if it's his own music."

//Good lord, Ariel. He's maybe seven.//

Seventeen, Jonothon. Seventeen.

Though to look at him, or to hear him sing, one probably would never realize as much.

//His music is over there,// he added, gesturing vaguely toward the R&B/pop music. //In that section you wouldn't catch me dead in.//

"He does not look seven, Jono," Ariel informed him with a bit of a smirk as she started to drift over toward the pop music.

And, of course, she had to add, in a chirping, sing-song voice, "Oh, you mean over here by all the fun music?"

//That is not th'fun music! That is where Th'Jonas Brothers live! And Miley!//

Oh yeah. He went there.

//Th'fun music is over here,// he added, hunkering down by the grunge and pulling out a Pearl Jam CD to practically cuddle up to. //Where we put th'albums recorded by people with musical talent.//

Ariel shook her head as she started flipping through the CDs looking for one with the cardboard cut-out's face on it. "Mmmm, yes, I've probably never heard of that music. Hey, by the way, I have some glasses I got last week that you might be interested in trying on..."

AHEM.

//This, from th'gel who didn't know that Justin Bieber was a singer,// Jono intoned, giving sad eyes to the CD that he was clutching at. //And besides, if you've never heard of Pearl Jam, you've officially been living under a rock for th'past twenty years.//

No, she'd been living under the sea. And it's only been seventeen years.

So Ariel stuck out her tongue at Jono. "I'm not from around here at all, remember?" she said. "And, besides, Pearl Jam was one of the first bands you taught me about, so we're good there."

//We are,// he allowed, snuggling the album for a moment more just because.

He had Bieber-related trauma. It helped soothe the burning pain in his soul.

//I just have difficulty seeing the appeal of a boy who at nearly twenty still sounds like a gel when he sings. What do people see in that?//

"If it sounds nice and he likes doing it," Ariel offered with a faint shrug, "then what does any of the other stuff matter?"

//Because he's a girly little plonker with a hideous bowl cut?//

Or else Jono was just bitter that Bieber had made it, and he never would. One of those.

//... Actually, no. He cut his hair. And then every thirteen year-old gel in America cried until he issued a public apology.//

Ariel gave Jono a little bit of a look at that first comment, before the second got a giggle out of her. "I'd ask for you to please tell me you're exaggerating, but now I'm thinking about my sisters probably doing something like that, too."

And maybe herself. La.

//Trust me, I can't possibly make up utter tripe like that,// Jono replied, shaking his head a little in disbelief. //It's all hype, luv. People who care more about th'pretty face,// and horrible hair, //than they do about th'music.//

There was a long, long pause, there. And then Jonothon buried his face in his hand and projected a rather exasperated sigh.

//D'you have those glasses with you, luv? I could almost go on like this until the end of time.//

"I've a couple more scarves, too," Ariel offered helpfully. "And I'm sure you'll fit into my skinny jeans, but I'll want them back. I do like those. They show off my legs."

Said, of course, with the pure thrilled enjoyment of someone who had only had them for about a year or so.

And then she let out an excited cry as she brandished a CD. "Found one! Sorry, Yo-Yo Ma, we'll get back to you later."

Oh, Yo-Yo Ma. Jono would miss you.

He'd take the cello over what was about to flood the store's sound system, any time.

//You know,// he said, conversationally, as he watched Ariel pull out the CD, //it took me about a month before I realized that th'woman singing 'Baby' was a boy.//

"And here you claim to know so much about music," Ariel shook her head once more, looking over the track listings before putting the CD into player. "Although, okay, he does look a little feminine, I'll give you that...

CD in, she clicked on over to track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z5-P9v3F8wg) that sounded like the one she'd like the most.

The fact that, "Awwww..." was the first thing to leave her was not a great sign.

Jono did not like that 'Aww.' At all. At. All.

//Never. Hit. Puberty.//

Said the late bloomer whose mutant powers held off until he was Bieber's age. Good job, Jono.

Ariel was giving Jono a look that suggested that his issues were showing.

"He kind of reminds me of a friend from back home," she said, because, yes, Justin Bieber was apparently Flouder.

"I think he's a good singer. Doesn't matter if it's not exactly all deep and manly."

Jono wasn't pouting. He wasn't pouting because he didn't have enough face with which to pout. But still? No pout.

//He can hold a note, I suppose,// he admitted, grudgingly.

"I suppose," Ariel repeated with a laugh. "Hey, I know I wouldn't kick him out of Glee Club just for being a troutymouth."

And Ariel knew troutymouths.

//... 'Trouty mouth,' Ariel?//

Sometimes, popular culture of the new millennium made his head hurt a little.

"Well, look at him," Ariel nodded her head toward the cutout. "Totally a troutymouth. But if that's where he gets that golden voice, I'll take it!"

Some of the best singers she knew were fish...

Jono squinted at the cutout for a moment, and then his face twisted in a way that was at least vaguely suggestive of a smirk.

//I think from here on, I might have to refer to him as 'Fishlips Beaver.'//

It made sense in his head.

After the 20-year reunion, he'd be eating that 'fishlips' comment, though.

"Fishlips Beaver," Ariel repeated, followed by a giggle. "It's kind of catchy, actually."

//More catchy than his music?//

And now Jono was officially trying too hard, wasn't he?

Ariel considered that, following a shake of her head. "Not so far. I think I'm going to be singing this all week now."

//Well, you can't blame a bloke for trying.//

But tomorrow, when it was just him in here, unsupervised, with the cutout?

Oh, then the tables would be turned. Oh yes.

Because I'm actually here. Yaaay.
