"Ah," said Apu when Shunsui came stumbling in through the doors of Turtle & Canary that afternoon. "You do still work here, I see..."

"Apu-san ♥! Don't sound so disappointed ♥!" Oh, how he had missed that constant look of disapproval! He fluttered immediately over to the liquor aisle, sweeping up a bottle of the finest sake. "Come on ♥! Let's have a drink ♥. I bet it's someone's birthday somewhere ♥!"

Apu-san was going to not so politely decline.

Even if it's not your birthday!

The man in the black suit and sunglasses entered the store, gave the squishy machine a directed glance and looked at Apu and Shunsui an evaluating look.

"I'm assuming one of you is Shunsui Kyōraku?" he asked.

The man in the black suit and sunglasses would have absolutely no trouble knowing which one it was, considering the look of complete shock and hatred on Apu's face at the mere suggestion that he could be mistaken for Shunsui Kyōraku and Shunsui's very pleased and contented sort of, "Heeee ♥."

"That would be me ♥," he continued proudly as Apu saw the chance to escape. "How may I be of service ♥? Can I interest you in any sake ♥?"

"No, thank you," K said as he approached the counter and showed Sunsui his id. "Agent Mannheim, United States Postal Inspection service. May I see some ID please?"

"Ah, well ♥," Shunsui shrugged and poured himself a cup. "More for me ♥! And I'd love to show you some ID, Mannheim-san, but I don't have any ♥!"

He seemed particularly pleased by this point. He was pretty sure Nanao-chan would have provided something to that nature at some point, but, by now, it was probably buried somewhere under all the sake bottles on the couch in his apartment.

"Are you sure you don't want any sake ♥?"

"I'm on duty," K said pulling a package and a clipboard out from his mail bag. "Mr. Shunsui. I have a package to deliver. However without ID you'll need to fill out these forms."

In triplicate.

There was a bit of a pause.

Part of it actually was from wondering what being on duty had to do with anything.

"Err," he said, "what qualifies as a form of ID, anyway?"

There was bound to be....something in the office. Not that he really knew; he never went back there if he could help it.

"A form of documentation with your name and picture on it," K said with a sigh. "Though in this tone I've learned to be... flexible with that documentation."

It's a big step for K to be that flexible. J was very proud of him back home.

Shunsui looked thoughtful for a moment. "Would the deed to the shop suffice ♥?" he wondered.

K sighed. Again. "Fair enough," he said with a gimme gesture. "Let's see it."

"Er..."

There was another slight pause, and Shunsui glanced back toward the office. He cleared his throat, and lifted a hand to help the dulcet tones of his gentle call carry through the store. "Oh, Apuuuu-saaaaaan ♥."

A long silence was a pretty good indication that Apu-san was going to be of no help. Shunsui sighed, then held up a finger to Mannheim and smiled. "Just one moment ♥," he assured him, and went to the phone on the counter. He waited while it rang, smiling with drunken contentment at the man in the suit all the while.

"Jane-chan ♥!" he spoke happily into the receiver, turning his broad shoulders away from his guest slightly as if to afford some privacy. "Ahh, no, no, no, my dear, nothing like that again, I promise you ♥! I'm calling for business, not pleasure, lovely Jane-chan ♥! Do you happen to know where those deeds for the shop my be ♥?"

"...no, I turned that into a liquor cabinet earlier...♥."

"...that too ♥."

This might take a while, Mannheim.

K patiently drummed his fingers on the counter and shared a look with Apu.

Yeah. He could be patient. Almost.

"You don't have a vendor's license on the premisis?" he suggested.

"Oh, no, no, no," Shunsui allowed. "I do, I just don't know where it is ♥. But it's okay. Jane-chan is on her way; she should be able to find it right away ♥. The woman, that is, not the canary ♥! Smart as a whip, that one ♥. And...." Somewhere under Shunsui's hat, eyebrows were wiggling as he leaned forward and whispered, not exactly quietly, "I hear she's pretty good with handling one, too ♥."

"I'm sure that's an excellent character reference," K said dryly. "Exactly how far away is she?"

"Oh, not very ♥," Shunsui smiled contentedly. "I believe she was at the school, as she has her class today ♥. Can I interest you in any sake while we wait ♥?"

"It's against federal regulations for member of the United States Postal Service to imbibe alcohol while performing his duties," K replied sharply.

"And that," said Shunsui with a laugh, "is what makes it so fun ♥!"

K opened his mouth to protest but ending up shrugging.

"Oh, what the hell. Hit me."

"Atta boy ♥!" Chuckling, Shunsui could only be more pleased by this development if Mannheim was a beautiful woman. Thankfully, that part of the equation should be here shortly. He poured a bit of the drink and passed the cup, somehow magically retrieved from the folds of his haori, over to the man. "I was worried I'd have another Apu-san on my hands ♥. Even the cheese panda drinks more than he does ♥."

"Well, if you're in Rome..."

...

"Did you say cheese panda?"

"Indeed I did, good sir ♥!" said Shunsui, pulling himself up proudly and pouring himself more sake. "He lives in the cheese aisle, and is very particular about what sort of cheese people buy. Usually, if someone wants something other than his brand, we just distract him a little or else there's overturned carts, thrown containers of yogurt, papers everywhere...Apu-san has to clean it up and gets so cross ♥."

K frowned for a moment and shrugged as he drank his sake in one gulp and motioned for more. "Well as long as he prefers the high quality cheese we won't have a problem."

Shunsui's expression was a little doubtful, so, of course, he wasn't going to say anything. He was just going to eye Mannheim slightly, clear his throat, and sip his sake particularly loud.

Thankfully, Jane's arrival at the shop was timely enough that the panda couldn't pick up on anyone suggesting his cheese wasn't the best. The prim little woman came into the shop showing proper haste, and not long after she got through the door, she was a flurry of speaking. "Here I am, Mr. Kyōraku," she said. "I would have come sooner, but I was quite in the middle of something, and I really have a hard time believing anyone could find anything in this shop after you've been here, and, really, Mr. Nahasapeemapetilon, I do wish you'd be just a bit more helpful toward Mr. Kyōraku; he is your boss, you know. But I shall be just a moment, I'm sure...Oh. Hello."

It appeared Jane finally noticed the other person there, nodding her head and giving a suggestion of a cursty. "I take it you're the source of all this paperwork trouble?"

"Yes. Yes I am," K replied. "I appreciate your timing, young lady before I break regulation 4.2837d0b5. Again. With one more bit of sake if you don't mind Mr. Shunsui."

"Not at all ♥!" Shunsui happily refilled Mannheim's cup...while producing yet another cup. "Jane-chan ♥? And on second thought, my dear, instead of going through all the trouble of finding that ID paperwork, why don't you just go ahead and help with filling out this other paperwork ♥? And, well, while you do, could you maybe wear these classes ♥?"

Before Jane could even get out a yes, thank you, just a bit, she had a cup of sake in one hand and was taking a pair of little black framed glasses from Shunsui with a bit of a befuddled frown.

"Again?" she asked, a little worriedly.

"I take it she's the brains of this operation?" K asked nobody in particular. It might have been Apu.

"Behind every impressive man," Shunsui said happily and just barely managed to keep from patting Jane-chan on the head, "is an even more impressive woman ♥."

Jane finished fitting on the glasses and frowned at the particular feeling that she might get patted. "What exactly is all this paperwork for, anyway?" she wondered, peering expectantly at the other gentleman.

K jabbed his thumb at the package sitting on the table. "Your boss got a package and didn't have the appropriate ID," K replied as he helped himself to more sake. "And in the process is helping me violate several federal regulations for employees."

"Mmmmmm," said Jane, a particularly disapproving sound as she started to fill out everything she could to her own capacity. "So you, too, have discovered one of Mr. Kyōraku's more....developed talents."

And Shunsui was, of course, just going to pull himself up proudly.

"She only says that," he added, "because she's yet to take me up on the offer to see some of the other developed talents ♥!"

"I'm not interested in seeing them either," K noted. "And I've drunk enough of these sakes that I don't care anymore about the paperwork."

"That...didn't take long..." said Shunsui, looking a little surprised and perhaps very disappointed in Mannheim's manliness.

"Oh, for Pete's sake!" Jane huffed slightly and gave both of them a bit of a cross look, before shaking her head and handing the pen over to Shunsui. "They're nearly finished, anyway, except for the personal information that I don't know, so since I'm sure it should be finished, sake or not, you'd best do it so we don't have to go through this again later."

"All right. All right," K said with a wave of his hand. "Finish the paperwork. I'm going to make friends with the cheese panda."

"And while he's doing that, Jane-chan," Shunsui said with a grin, filling out the rest of the forms in Japanese, "maybe we can get to be better friends ♥."

"Might I suggest starting with the Panda brand cheese?" offered Jane as K wandered off, roundly ignoring Shunsui entirely. "It'll leave a wonderful first impression, from my observations thus far. And bamboo. He's very fond of that, though it's a bit scarce in this habi---"

Jane realized she was mostly talking to herself again, as K was gone and Shunsui was just staring at the shape of her bustle. She sighed. "--tat."

A few moments later K was back with two blocks of Panda brand cheese. And a squishy.

"Nice bear. We done here?"

"I believe so ♥!" Shunsui happily handed the paperwork over. "I take it now I can see what some wanton admirer of mine sent me ♥?"

"Knock yourself out," K said before sucking on his squishy. Good stuff.

I know whose birthday it iiiiiiiiis =D
