Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, The Park, Friday Afternoon

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. And just in case there was any lingering doubt as to the purpose of the picnic, a glittery banner (Petra's work, naturally) adorned the registration tables:

It was hard to believe when he had no clue what Tyrion was even talking about.

"And you are certain that you are not heading the same way as Aerys? Hearing voices usually isn't a good sign, brother," he was smirking as he digested the piece of information that he could grasp. "You know. That would make the Stark words more than a little tedious, but they would be more accurate at least."

"If I'[m mad, the whole world is mad with me," Tyrion said, gesturing to an ~~NPC~~ young man talking on a cell phone. "Look, that tablet he's holding. They call them telephones."

Not that he had the first idea what the word meant, but he figured if he said it authoritatively enough Jaime might not ask.

"There are Starks here," he added, "but no relation to Lord Eddard's family that I can tell. They ... build things." Said with a certain curiosity. "I've met two so far."

Jaime kept an eye on the man with the telephone as Tyrion talked, tilting his head as he tried to figure out what he was talking about.

"You realise Maester Pycelle nearly wet himself merely seeing the invitation we received from this school?" he asked casually. "If he ever saw any of these things, he would not be able to see another King to blather about."

Tyrion snickered. "He'd drive himself mad trying to understand this place. You know, they don't even have a proper lord? No one can answer when I ask whose land this is. They point me to the heads of the school and the town."

Which only made Tyrion think about trying to claim it for himself ... once a week or so.

"Really now?" Jaime let his eyes wander away from the man to take in the buildings surrounding them. He might not possess the ambitions his father thought were appropriate for him, but he was still a Lannister.

"So no real Lord to take charge when things get complicated?" he asked. "Or is this like the Free Cities?"

"The most like the free cities, but without the slaving," Tyrion decided. "Still. Quite a change."

"Good or bad?" Jaime wondered. "You're not thinking of taking up residence here, are you? Find a nice wench to settle down with and have little lion cubs. The one with security on her chest is pretty nice."

"Too new to say," Tyrion said, to the question of good-vs-bad, then rolled his eyes extravagantly at his brother. "A world of no, to the lion cubs. Though she is quite nice."

A sly beat. "And tends bar at the better tavern tomorrow, if you're interested."

"Hardly," Jaime said with a laugh, though the wench had been rather pleasant on the eye. She had nothing on Cersei, however. "I have my vows. You know I keep to them, brother."

"You and very few others," Tyrion said affably. "I admire your fidelity, and I'm glad I don't have to try for it.

Jaime wondered if his brother was more aware of how matters were than he was letting on, but that was one subject he did not intend to broach. Besides, Cersei will kill him herself.

"As I am glad not having to teach these students of yours," he reassured him. Not that he'd met them so far.

Tyrion didn't know. He probably would have if he'd thought about it, but there were certain truths even he didn't want to ponder too deeply.

"You'd like them," he said. "Oh -- I'll have to point out Kate to you. She would be my assistant-slash-bodyguard."

"Exactly what sort of bodyguard are we talking about here, Tyrion?" Jaime asked, mostly amused. "I am certain you can find a better sellsword even here."

By better, he meant male, of course.
