Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, The Park, Friday Afternoon

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. And just in case there was any lingering doubt as to the purpose of the picnic, a glittery banner (Petra's work, naturally) adorned the registration tables:

"I have no clue," Petra admitted. "They seem to sort of do what Dany tells them to, but they're, you know, hers. But, ummm, let's see. Oh my God, there's so much to show you, I don't even know where to begin! Did you see the banner I made?"

"Start wherever you like, and we'll end at the end," Tiara said, then shook her head. "You made a banner? Where is it?"

She looked around the park. "....oooh. Is yours one of the glittery ones?"

"Yep," Petra confirmed, pointing at the banner over by the registration tables. "I told you I made the Student Council, right? Well, I mean, it's not that great an accomplishment, there were only two juniors running for three seats. But it'll be fun. I thought about buying a stuffed lemur for the third seat, but no one would get it, and lemurs kind of freak me out now."

"Yeah, what if the lemur actually made one of you crazy?" Tiara asked. She was ... about two-thirds kidding. "Nobody wants that. And you would have made it even if everybody in your class ran, but I'm proud of you anyhow."

"See, that's why we're not getting a lemur," Petra agreed. "Half the people at this school are crazy enough already. Although not, like, Taylor crazy, crazy. Just...yeah." It defied words, okay?

"You wouldn't have stuck around if the whole island was Taylor crazy," Tiara said, though the subject made her a little sad. She hoped Taylor was okay, or at least happy. As happy as she could be, until she was ready to get better and come home.

"Is it really totally different from living with pageant girls? Like, would I like it here?"

"I think you would totally like it here!" Petra said. "Some of it's crazy but almost everyone has been great, and I'm having a lot of fun when the magic or whatever stops messing with everyone long enough." She was trying to be more dignified than flinging her arms around Tiara again and informing her she was never allowed to leave, but considering she was kind of bouncing she came in at 'just barely more dignified than that.' But pfft, who needed dignity when you had friends? "And the classes? They're like, not like normal boring school classes, they're actually interesting."

"Wait, the magic is a real thing and it messes with people?"

Tiara raised her eyebrows. Petra had mentioned it in her emails and stuff, but Tiara sort of assumed it was a metaphor thingie. "My mom would freak out about that. Unless it's really Christian magic."

Tiara's mom thought eleven was too old for pole dancing. But Petra was biting her tongue on that. "I don't know? Maybe? A bunch of the girls turned into guys last weekend. I was fine, nothing happened to me." Thank God. "And a few weeks before that everyone thought they were different people with way more dramatic lives. It's like, weird stuff will happen over the weekend and then by Monday everything's back to normal. It keeps life from being predictable."

"Um, well, that's good?" Tiara couldn't have sounded much more uncertain if she tried. "I don't think I'd want to turn into a boy, though. I'd walk all funny."

"...you get used to it," Petra said. "I guess I just didn't realize how used to it I'd gotten." And then she said to the other, "Tiara. Do I walk funny?"

"What? No," Tiara said, surprised but with a pageant girl's confidence about such things. "Your walk is awesome. But like you said, you're used to it."

"No, I meant you get used to the island being--never mind. Both are actually true," Petra said. "So it's fine."
