Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, The Park, Friday Afternoon

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. And just in case there was any lingering doubt as to the purpose of the picnic, a glittery banner (Petra's work, naturally) adorned the registration tables:

Once she'd stomped his foot hard enough to shut him up about her childhood, Caroline could smile again at Jake, who was still deserving of her smiles unlike some people. "Anyway! Let's change the subject."

Excuse Jake for smirking at the violence, but at least he was reaching out to draw her back towards him and away from Tyler. To keep him safe of the abuse. "I don't know, I might want to hear this."

Was Jake trying to get hurt? Because that would be Caroline's cue to let him share in Tyler's pain as she tried to pinch his side. "You do not! It is not a good story!"

Hey, Tyler wasn't complaining that Caroline was out of range. "You've noticed she's a terrible liar, right?"

"Uh huh," Jake agreed, crinkling his nose at her as he caught her hand to keep her from doing any more damage. "It's cute."

"It is. Once you get past all the obsessive-compulsive disorder stuff, she's kind of hilarious." OCD was a nice way of saying insane, right?

"Yeah, so we're totally not actually talking about me like I'm not right here," she told them, leaning against Jake's side to try and free her hand. "I don't care if you're both nearly stronger than me."

"Stronger," Jake corrected, smirking a little as he let go of her hand so he could wrap his arm around her waist. "What if we like talking about you? Should we go to dinner and catch up with you later?"

Yeah, he was teasing and he would die if she left him alone with this guy.

"Oh my God, you would not even dare, Jacob Black!" Caroline complained, thinking he might actually do it just to torture her with wondering what they were saying about her behind her back.

Tyler glanced between the two of them and shook his head. "I think he would, Forbes. Though now you're damn lucky Elena couldn't make it. She probably has way more dirt than I do."

Jake raised an eyebrow, but he supposed that explained the lack of girl hanging around. "That's a shame. She's not sick?"

"She texted me something vague about Jenna and girl time," Caroline shrugged, unable to suppress the eyeroll at Elena not showing twice now. "I swear, Elena is the luckiest orphan ever."

Tyler snorted. "Nice, Caroline." Some jealousies never changed.

"Her loss," Jake replied, his hand rubbing the small of her back. He had no clue who Jenna was, though, but he didn't feel like asking when Tyler so obviously did. "So you just get to hang out with some werewolves this weekend."

"Well, you know how much I enjoy being the center of attention," she said, thinking this over. "Especially when we're talking about hot werewolves who aren't attempting to kill me. And you, Tyler."

He had to laugh, what with how she looked so mature when she said that. "Just point me at whatever party you've put together and we'll count it a good visit."

"Are there parties?" Jake wondered since Tyler seemed to be insistent on it, but as far as Jake knew the recital was sort of it.

"Uh, not really," Caroline said, looking apologetic. "I chose to hang with you guys rather than throw something massive so this is kind of it, ta-da!" She smiled big and tried to turn Vanna White-style to highlight the big old buffet.

"Seriously?" Maybe Caroline was ill. "I thought you said you were on the council?" He glanced up at Jake. "Are we sure this is Caroline Forbes, the girl who threw herself a party for someone else's birthday?"

Considering how much parties tended to go with them, Jake didn't mind the lack. He shrugged at Tyler. "I don't really care as long as there's plenty of food."

"Yeah, well, I've tried to move away from the whole 'getting trashed in hopes I won't have to think about how much I want some blood' thing," she shared, leaving out that she'd basically replaced alcohol with sex, shh. "But there is a bar on island that serves students if you decide you can't stand just eating your cares away."

"Maybe after you take me on the inevitable school tour we'll all be ready to stop in for a quick one." Okay, so Tyler was ready now, but that look on Jake's face was no where near positive. "You gonna come along, Jake?"

"Yeah, sure," Jake nodded, thinking it out of the question that he was going to let Tyler try and get Caroline drunk. "I'll stick to soda, though. Unlike Caroline, the whole control thing and alcohol don't really mix so well for me."

He didn't know that, but it was an easy assumption given how he didn't realise that he'd probably just burn the alcohol right off.

"Yeah, I really lucked out that beer has a positive effect on some of the uh, side effects of being this way," Tyler admitted, thinking how awkward this outing was going to be.

"I wonder if that's a universe thing. Like if Jake's vampires wouldn't experience the benefit either," Caroline said, looking rather interested in the idea.
