The Beach [afternoon]

Phil Keoghan strode down the beach as the waves crashed magestically against the rocks behind him.

"Welcome to Fandom, Maryland," he said, "the fifth leg in a race around the world for $50,000. Our some number of teams are currently sleeping off their 37 hour flights from Windhoek, Namibia and are totally suffering from killer fatigue." He arched an eyebrow toward the non-existent cameras. "This............is the Amazing Race."

Howard had just been trying to get out of his lab for once when he found himself shanghaied over to the beach for something they kept calling 'The Amazing Race'.

He didn't have a television, so this was more than a little confusing.

"Namibia? Where the heck is that?" Oh, time differences.

Yeah, Dean had no idea. Hell, he'd just been taking a walk before heading back to town for coffee. And then there was this, and....

Whatever, he was going with it.

"No clue, man," he offered, "but it sounds exotic."

Or something.

Howard shot the man a look, judging his stubble with all his might. A card was shoved into his hand by a helpful production assistant to explain what was going on.

"We're... college friends who are on this race to earn money to adopt a child from China." Wait, what? "What?"
drinks_coffeezilla: (Uh- Seriously?)

"News to me," Dean reported, leaning over to look at the card. "So we're, what, actors now?"

A beat.

"Wait, this is a race?"

Yeah. The adopting a kid part wasn't on his list of weird things about this situation. Hell, the 'friends' part wasn't all that bad, either, though it wasn't something he'd just casually bring up in conversation. Being a beatnik meant he was open-minded, but come on, he was still fresh out of the fifties, here.

"It seems to be one of those weekends," Howard replied dryly, offering the card over to Dean so he wouldn't have to deal with that ridiculous back story. "I was killed in the last one after being betrayed at the alter."

So don't get any ideas, Dean.

Hey, now. If they were 'friends,' they probably didn't have any altars in mind. Possibly they were from one of those states that didn't allow it.

Or they'd gotten married in Canada and just learned that they were now divorced.

The news these days baffled Dean a bit.

"I've only heard a bit about these things," he admitted, raising an eyebrow. There was not enough coffee in the world for this. "Not really in the mood to die, though. So, what, we just play along?"

Him and Howard both. Then again, neither of them had hit Stonewall yet, so it was all very surprising to be so open still.

"I was afraid you'd say that." By afraid, he meant annoyed. "Howard Stark."

"Dean McCoppin," he introduced easily, offering Howard a hand. For shaking. Not for whatever it was that college friends were supposed to do with hands before a race, thanks. "Art teacher."

Of course.

Howard was already halfway through shaking his hand when the 'art teacher' part was said. "New in town?"

"Yeah," Dean replied. "Just came into town for this semester. It's not bad. Kids are enthusiastic if you feed them enough coffee, anyhow."

He was under no illusions about why any high school student would take an art class. Odds were that it wasn't because they were hoping to pursue a career in the arts.

"That sounds like my shop," Howard admitted, trying to figure out just where they were supposed to be racing to. "Hopefully less crying."

Topher. Seriously.
drinks_coffeezilla: (What you gonna do?)

Re: Get your assignment!

[personal profile] drinks_coffeezilla 2012-01-14 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"No crying, yet. And only one kid's tried to eat the paste so far."

That was encouraging, kind of.

"So. Which shop is yours, man?"

It would be helpful to know what his college friend did for a living, after all.

That sounded about right.

"Stark Industries," he replied with a proud little smirk. "It's a nice break from California."

Juliet was geared up in a track suit, and sat on the ground with her backpack beside her. She probably didn't need to do calisthenics for this leg of the race, but looking athletic made for better TV.

"I feel like i really grew as a person in Namibia," she earnestly informed the camera in voice-over. "The orphans had so much to teach me."
stars_and_money: (That doesn't please me.)

Jeremy was of like mind when it came to looking athletic.

Of course, he mostly looked like a rich boy in a far too expensive track suit than athletic, per se. But it was the thought that counted.

"Oh God I'm so tired."

Yeah, that didn't help, either.

"I know," Juliet agreed, sitting up from her stretches and flopping her hair back. "I barely slept on the plane. Want me to take the roadblock?"
stars_and_money: (See my side.)

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2012-01-14 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know, I think we should still look at who's best suited for it, you know?"

And he'd made her do how many roadblocks so far? While yelling at her from the sidelines to do it faster, no less.

"But I can totally look after the money on this leg."

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's only $34," Juliet noted, disgruntled. "We're going to have to save most of it for cabs."

Certain people had maybe had a hard time with the no-shopping-for-souvenirs thing.
stars_and_money: (Lazy time.)

Jeremy made a face, momentarily forgetting how he'd been trying to keep a brave face through all of this.

"Remind me why we're doing this, again?"

Re: Get your assignment!

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they got to be on TV, duh.

"To see the world," Juliet said. "And spread our message."

Not that she remembered their message in a coherent way right then.
stars_and_money: (Uh okay then.)

Re: Get your assignment!

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2012-01-14 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeremy looked a little confused. "I thought it was to show our parents we can survive a thing like this?"

It was probably all of those. But mostly the TV thing.

Re: Get your assignment!

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"That's our message," Juliet said, like it should have been obvious. "That ...people like us can survive something like this, so all the children at home should follow their dreams no matter what their parents say!"

Or it was the being on TV thing.
