Community Center, Friday Evening

When it came to Fandom, the typical alumni mixer type events tended to include a few key elements: food, drinks, and dancing.

Tonight? Not so much. Well, there was still the food and drinks, and probably nobody would actually stop you if you decided to go ahead and get jiggy with it, but the setup didn't exactly lend itself to dancing.

The setup in question? Well, the room was made to look as if a giant slumber party were taking place. There were ample blankets and pillows, and a big movie screen set up on one side of the room in order to play appropriately-themed movies.

"I have been well," Raven said with a small smile. It wasn't lying, it was just exaggerating. "How much time has passed for you?"

Things in their galaxy. Normal for a while. Ahahahahaha.

"My first instinct," Tahiri admitted, because she did have a certain Yuuzhan Vong tendency toward paranoia, "is to say that isn't cynicism, it's just practicality."

"Since the Nothing took my galaxy and then gave it back?" Tahiri frowned slightly. "About eight months, I think."

She glanced across the community center and added, quietly, "This is the first time I've been back since Anakin got here."

Raven followed her gaze. "Is that him?" she said. "I had heard him mentioned on the radio, but I have not met him yet ~~because his player sucks~~."

She bit her lip, realizing that must be what was bothering Tahiri now. "Are you all right?" she said softly. "I know this must be difficult for you to see him."

Anakin started, his eyes going wide. He was used to being able to communicate wordlessly with Tahiri, but this was clearer than he'd ever managed before. It had to be because she was older and had more practice, he guessed.

You mean my grandfather, don't you?

The slight bit of apprehension that tinged his Force-sense? He couldn't hide that from her if he tried.

~~I KNOW, RIGHT? HIS PLAYER IS A HORRIBLE PERSON.~~

"That's him," Tahiri confirmed. "It isn't difficult -- it's not as if I wasn't expecting this, when I got here. But it is a bit of a --"

She muttered something guttural in Yuuzhan Vong.

"He's so little."

"Yeah, I know," she sighed. "I'm trying to ignore that thought when it pops into my head."

Ben held on tightly, falling back on old habits and cradling her head against his chest.

"Hey there."

"I am glad you were forewarned, at least," Raven said. It must've been Jaina or Ben who'd done so, and she couldn't imagine it was easy for them to see Anakin there as well.

"Perhaps his fate will not be the same..." she started to say, but she was having trouble believing it.

Tahiri made a face. "Me too. It isn't the most cheerful way to look at things, is it?"

Oh, like they knew cheerful.

"Hi," Tahiri replied, hugging back about as hard as she dared. "I told you I'd get a chance to make it back eventually, didn't I?"

"Since when has cheerful factored into anything?" Seriously.

Tahiri shook her head hard. "I don't want to think about it, no. Maybe, maybe not, but worrying about that for myself is hard enough. I don't want to worry about that, too. But never mind," she went on in a rush. "I came back to see all of you."

And Jaina. But that went without saying.

Raven was more than happy to seize upon a subject change. "You have been missed," she said. "What have you been doing for these past months?"

"I'm so glad to see you," said Ben, who wasn't planning on letting go any time soon. He sent a quick, concerned pulse through the Force at her. "You've met our latest arrival?"

"Sometimes," Tahiri said after a moment, "I begin to think I come back here because I missed you being annoyingly logical at me."

Tahiri responded with a brief pulse of reassurance. "I have, yeah. He may be more weirded out than I am." She looked up into his face, and smiled. "It's really good to see you, too."

"Don't think of it as 'annoyingly logical,' think of is as 'pragmatic,'" she advised. "I find it helps."

Tahiri grinned at her. "You got that from me, didn't you?"

Like a minute ago.

"Maybe," she grinned back. "It just sounds better."

No Hannibal tonight, he was safe.

"It has, and I am all the better for knowing I'm a favourite." Of course she was. Angela beamed widely at him. "How do I not see you at more of these things?"

"Probably because I haven't come to one in a while," Romeo admitted. "Though if you told me you'd be at them, I might come more often."

More seriously, he added, "Mostly, it's school, and Tokyo's a long way to come from."

Ben smiled back, genuinely thrilled to see her. "Welcome back."

"Working, practically nonstop," Tahiri replied with a laugh, and she was never going to give Jaina a hard time about it again.

Okay, yes, she would.

"I've been working with the Yuuzhan Vong refugees, helping them to get settled in on their new world. It's . . . occasionally a real challenge."

"Thanks." Tahiri glanced Anakin's way and smiled. "It's quite the interesting welcome this time around, isn't it?"
