Her second week at work, April was taking the scientific approach: pouring things into glasses, combining them with other things, and evaluating the results.

Some were good. Some were okay. Some were getting donated to Tino so that he could experience how horrible they were for himself.

Poor guy kept falling for it. That was okay, though. It was funny.

Up on the sign where the specials usually went, April had scrawled:

$5 OFF YOUR DRINK IF YOU LET ME DECIDE WHAT'S IN IT

"Double one of those whiskey things," Atton ordered without looking. He slid into a stool, leaned forward, and-- "Oh, it's you."

"You sound so excited," April said dryly, reaching for a bottle and pouring some whiskey into a glass for him. "Would you prefer Tino?"

Tino was currently glaring at April's latest creation, a murky brown drink she'd concocted mainly to horrify him. It was possible he was not entirely happy tonight.

"Nah, I just wasn't expecting you," Atton said. "I half thought you'd be one of the students."

He cast a glance across the bar towards whatever Tino was glaring at, then took a sip of his whiskey. "Don't tell me. You're messing around with the drinks?"

"He likes it," April assured him.

Tino liked nothing of the sort.

"Are students even allowed to bartend? You'd think that'd be a no-no." If, you know, anyone on the island gave a shit.

"I thought your competitors were the only ones who cared," Atton said. "I mean, otherwise I wouldn't be here."

This was the one downside of his ruse, he was starting to find out. His fake ID was meant to hide the fact he was old enough to drink around here.

...

"Point."

She was nineteen, after all.

"So you are a student, then." Thaaaaat was good to know.

"As of last month. It's been a real ride so far," Atton said.

Dryly. Very dryly.

While slamming back his whiskey.

"Pony, evil goats..." April started, ticking them off on her fingers. "Anything else I missed?"

Jono actually almost felt somewhat guilty for not coming to the bar last weekend, but then, he'd been a pony, and he had a line that he drew when it came to patronizing local businesses while decidedly horse-shaped.

"That sounds to me like a challenge," he decided, taking a seat at the bar and giving the specials board a nod. "Dare I ask what you've been deciding to put into these things so far tonight, luv?"

April turned to jab a finger in Tino's direction. "Don't say anything," she instructed him sternly.

Tino was, predictably, silent.

"Oh, you know," April said, turning back to Jono. "Booze."

Yeah that got an upward twitch of the eyebrow, right there.

"I like booze," he intoned, after a moment's pause. "Generally. Fine, I'll give whatever you mix up this evening a go. Can't be any worse than some of the things I've put in my gob over th'years."

And yes, that was a challenge.

April, yes, April was grinning. "Okay," she said, in the tone of one accepting a fabulous challenge here, and she reached for a few bottles.

Her back to Jono the whole time, she whipped something (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Car_Bomb) up, and then slid it across the bar to him when she was finished.

"All yours."

"You're looking to get me very drunk, very swiftly, aren't you?" Jono smirked as he took the drink, knowing full-well what it was, and then knocked it back quickly so that the Irish Cream wouldn't have a chance to curdle.

And, while the drink wasn't likely to knock him flat on his ass from alcohol content alone, he did need to take a moment to kind of close his eyes, inhale, and recuperate from something with that much taste to it all at once.

... Which looked almost like the same thing, but with a much quicker recovery time and a slight chance of barely-suppressed tastegasm sounds.

April... couldn't help but laugh at that, because wow, those sounds.

"Everything okay over there?" she asked, very dryly.

"Jusfine," Jono replied, waving one hand and doing his best to regain some sort of coherency, there. "That was just... a good deal of Irish all at once."

A beat.

"It was rather good, actually."

HE WAS GOING TO BE OKAY.

April was almost grinning now, which from her was an extremely rare occurrence. "You're welcome to another if you want," she said, amused.

Really, now. Like Jono even needed to stop to think about that offer.

"Please," he decided pretty much immediately, sliding his emptied glass back her way. "Let's see how many more stupid noises we can get out of me before the evening's through, hm?"

He didn't have to get up for a Sunday morning broadcast tomorrow! He could stay up all night if he wanted to, drinking like a complete idiot! With his mouth! Which still managed to be novel over a year later, yes.

"Challenge accepted," April said with some surprise, sliding the used glass across the counter to Tino and grabbing a new one to fill.

Drink number two was assembled in the same way as its predecessor, but before she handed it over--

"I'm not gonna have to call you a rickshaw or carry you back to your place after you drink yourself stupid, am I?"

"I live right around the corner," Jono replied with a shake of his head. "At th'Boards. The only way I could get myself utterly trolleyed and have a shorter walk home would be if I had gone to the Devil's Nest, instead."

Which was right next door to the Boards, which generally made it a far more convenient trek when he was planning to get plastered.

"Anyhow, I can hold a fair bit of liquor before I start stumbling about. You'll have to worry more about not being able to comprehend not 'alf of what comes out of my mouth before long, but that's about the worst of it."

His accent tended to get thicker the drunker he got.

"That work for you?"

April responded by handing the drink over, then leaning across the bar on her elbows to watch his reaction. Maybe there would be more amusing noises.
