If not for radio and her bar shift, Jaye would have had to spend the fourth of July back in Niagara Falls at a family barbecue, watching Sharon interpret the outdoor environment as her personal right to chain smoke when their parents weren't paying attention, watching her mom drop casual mentions of her upcoming book into conversation with the guests, and wishing her dad would just put on pants instead of wearing shorts and then finally placing bets with Aaron on whether or not this would be the year that the neighbors finally set something on fire with the display they were insistent that Canada should see.

So, god bless America or whatever, because Jaye was at the bar, happy to be here and have an excuse to drink.

There was a lot of country music coming from that stage. Jaye did not approve.

Where Jaye was sipping on a Patriot-ini. What. It was kind of good.

As somebody who had given his life for his country (nearly literally, then officially, then literally but in a different sense), Coulson felt it was his duty to imbibe in patriotic drinks tonight.

"Good evening. Which special drink would you say is the most patriotic?"

"Hey... Temporary Squirrel." Had he told her his name? Like she remembered. "Most patriotic would be... the Patriot-ini."

Because it cost the most.

"Ms Tyler. You mean the drink you're changing the name of?" Coulson checked as he read the specials again. "Okay, let's go with that."

"Patriot-ini just fits the theme better," she said, starting on the drink. "Though I guess it could keep the real name for those people who just have to pick the thing that's different..."

Who would not be her, nope.

"I like the way you have it right now. It keeps everyone happy," Coulson said. "And if they're not, then they can just order one and drink that away."

"I knew I liked you," Jaye said, passing over the drink. "Besides the squirreling thing."

"I've been told I'm affable," Coulson said as he picked up and inspected his drink. "Should we say the pledge or something before I drink this?"

"Not unless you want to be known as that guy who says the pledge of allegiance in a bar before drinking," she said.

"I take it that's frowned upon?" Coulson checked.

"Before drinking. But only before," she said. "Unless I can get video to post to the internet."

"I think I'll pass on that," Coulson said. "To America."

And then he sipped his patriotic Sam drink.

"I've never heard someone toast America before," Jaye said, sipping her own drink sans toast.

"How often have you tended bar on the 4th of July?" Coulson asked.

"I've been in bars for the fourth of July a ton."

Tended bar, nope!

"Maybe it's a specific kind of bar where America gets toasted. But only on the major holidays. Or during the Olympics," Coulson said.

Jaye blinked.

"We're so having a drinking game here for the Olympics," she just decided. Her tips would be awesome.

"What are you thinking? Three different sized drinks for medals?" Coulson asked.

THIS. THIS WAS HOW INSANE THINGS HAPPENED.

"Sure. And if they get the wussy bronze they have to chug it," she decided.

"What about if they don't get any medals?" Coulson asked.

"Please, it's America."

Duh.

"But I guess then they have to do a shot for every gold China won."

"That's only fair," Coulson said.

"I wonder if I can get a cut of all the profits it'll bring in," she wondered. Of course she did.

"You're not just going to encourage tips in the name of patriotism?" Coulson asked.

"Not just," Jaye said. "Viva la capitalism. There's really no better way to say 'yay America.'"

Oh Jaye. Jaye, Jaye, Jaye.

Where you could take your drinks and go away.

Where you could totally watch fireworks on the TV when they started. Because going outside and looking up is just too much to ask.

This is the first time in like three years I'm not going to be driving home on the 5 from my friends' house and hoping I don't rear end anyone because I'm too busy watching the fireworks as I drive.
