The bar was still open tonight, but most of the activity would probably be in the back room where the party was set up. There bar itself had been made to look a little like a tiki hut with the top missing, there were little masks all around, there were leis and mai tais and rum punch (along with the regular stuff, but play along, guys) and even tiki torches around the room.

Kitty still had no idea why Tino had any of this.

And it sucked that that meant she'd had to actually put it all up herself. Sigh, Tino. Sigh.

Jaina hadn't been much in the partying mood lately for some weird reason, but she tended to at least try to get out and be social at least for a little while. So she could make an appearance, get a drink she wasn't going to finish, and wondered whether the torches would set off any fire alarms.

Priestly felt a little weird at showing up to an adults-only party -- he was still getting used to thinking of himself as an adult -- but that wasn't going to stop him from showing up and being social.

He was even wearing his best "Plant for the CIA" t-shirt for the occasion.

"What exactly is a tiki, anyway?"

"It's a South Pacific thing. People mostly use it to refer to the whole style of... this." Kitty waved an arm around. "You ever hear of like tiki idols and stuff?"

"Oh, yeah, totally," Priestly assured her. "It's a kitschy American staple. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what it actually, like, originally means. To the South Pacific islanders, you know?"

"It refers back to the creation of the first man and woman, in Maori culture," Kitty replied, and shrugged. "If I don't know something, I immediately have to look it up. It's like a sickness."

"I can get behind that sickness. Also, that makes the theme kind of way more awesome. Adults only birth of humankind party."

"With alcohol and leis," she added. "I have a feeling that part's not very authentic."

"But may potentially lead to propagation of the species." Well, probably not. "Or at least lots of bad jokes."

"Someone else is going to have to make the propagation happen," Kitty decided. "To be honest I'm kind of amazed Tino's not hanging at the door asking people if they want to get lei'd."

"Maybe he realized that's kinda creepy?" I mean, Tino. "Or he's not drunk enough yet?"

"I hope it's the first thing," Kitty said, making a face. "I really, really hope it's the first thing."

"Me too," Priestly agreed, rather fervently. "We may need a contingency plan if it's not, though."

Kitty put on her most interested face. "Along what kind of lines are you thinking here?"

". . . Finding a buncha guys to tackle him?" Yeah, Priestly hadn't really thought of anything yet. "How distractable is he with shiny things?"

"Depends on ~~who's writing him~~ the day," she said. "Maybe we can carry drinks to throw in his face and run away if we need to?"

This was a real conversation at the adults party.

See above, re: Priestly still not quite to thinking of himself as an adult. "That could work. And, hey, if we don't need to throw them, we'll have a tasty beverage handy."

"See, good plan. If I go arm myself, do you want me to bring any ammo back for you?"

Sigh, Kitty. Sigh.

"Sounds good to me. Go for something festive." He managed not to ask for something that wouldn't clash with his hair. He was proud of himself for that.

Well that just meant when she came back a minute later, she had two mai tais in hand, handing one over to him.

"The umbrella makes it festive," she said seriously.

"That's what umbrellas are for," Priestly decided. "That whole rain thing is a total misnomer."
