April had been very pleased to exit the carnival when her phone had beeped to let her know that there was something at Caritas she needed to do. The carnival was lame and boring and full of people who smelled weird, so she far preferred this air-conditioned bar, where another little boy was sticking straws in Kool-Aid pouches.

"You're doing that wrong, you know," she told him -- not precocious, just mean. "Pointy end first. That's why you keep hitting your finger."

"Shut up," little Tino mumbled to her, but he dutifully started switching the straws.

April hopped onto the bar and sat there, regal. That lasted about a minute before she turned back to Tino curiously. "You got any food?"

"Can I have a drink?" Jaq asked as he slogged into the bar.

He'd felt like it called to him. Odd, that.

"What kind?" April felt that was a fair question. "There's juice and milk and soda and other not-bar things."

Jaq considered that. "What kind of juice?" he asked cautiously.

"Hey, assistant," April barked to Tino. "What kind of juice?"

Tino scowled, but rattled off a list. It was a very long list. He stumbled over some of the words.

"...I don't know any of those," Jaq said, terribly confused. "Um. Milk, please."

"'Kay," April said, nodding for Tino to pour him a glass. Poor Tino had no idea why he'd ended up enslaved by a dictatorial tiny bartender, but apparently he was going with it. "I'm April."

"It's white," Jaq said of his drink, furrowing his brow. "And I'm Jaq."

"You want the chocolate kind?" she suggested. "It's too sweet for me but we have it."

"You have hot chocolate?" Jaq asked. "I'd like some."

"Chocolate milk," April corrected Jaq. She rummaged around under the counter for a minute, then came up with a bottle of chocolate syrup. "You just pour it into normal milk. My mom does it at home."

Jaq peered at the bottle curiously. Then shook it a little. "Shouldn't the milk be warm?"

If that even was milk. He wasn't so sure.

"Ew, no."

SORRY, JAQ. THAT WAS WRONG.

"Make my milk warm?" Jaq requested anyway, giving her an annoyed look. "You're supposed to be the server person."

"Yeah, but not for stupid orders," April countered. She sighed, upended the chocolate syrup into Jaq's glass, stirred it with a stirrer, and shoved it back at him. "There."

Her awesome customer service skills had not been an acquired talent.

"Warm it up," Jaq said, stymied, and pushed the glass back towards her.

April crossed her arms over her chest. "Don't know how."

She totally did.

"Just put it in the processor," Jaq informed her.

"Tino peed in it."

LIES. ALL LIES.

"Put it on a fire," Jaq insisted.

"I'm too young." Oh god, children. This could go on forever. "Just drink it. Don't be a baby."

"I'm not drinking it until you make it like how it's supposed to be," Jaq told her, pushing the glass away.

Tino looked like he was getting a headache.

April tried a new tactic. "Okay, but it'll cost a million dollars," she warned him.

"Does it cost a million dollars?" Jaq asked Tino.

Smartly.

"He can't count that high," April interrupted him before Tino could give away anything incriminating. "Just sip it first. If you still don't like it I can give you a discount."

Huh. Was this working?

No, April. It was most likely not working.

Jaq took a sip.

And pulled a face.

"Make it warm," he said. He would not be played for a sucker here.

April gave him a very unimpressed look.

"You're the worst," she told him, and stuck the glass in a microwave. "I hope it blows up."

Well then.
