Darling Party!, The Park, Wednesday Evening

The Darling twins were turning eighteen today, and thus crossing the threshold into legal adulthood. While that may have been a terrifying thought to some, it also meant that there was going to be a huge freaking party because they were Darlings and no special occasion could get past them without a huge deal being made out of it. So after sundown on this Wednesday evening, there was a huge banner set up in a corner of the park:

HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY, JULIET & JEREMY!
And underneath the banner were party tents set up with outdoor heaters and lights, for comfort and atmosphere. There were tables decked with food (including a huge, ridiculous cake) and drink (you were going to have to be an adult or filthy rich to get anything alcoholic, though), of course, and there was and music, and even a karaoke set-up should the mood strike anyone to sing.

It all looked like someone had paid a whole lot of money to make it all happen, and that was before you took in the table with the gift bags. No, not for the twins, though there was a table for any gifts people might bring them as well. No, these gift bags were for the guests. Yes, you were getting gifts just out of attending someone else's birthday party. That was how they rolled – and it was possible Letitia had realized the twins weren't perfectly integrated into the island community. The Darlings weren't above bribery and gaining people's affections with expensive trinkets.

The park was ready for a good time to be had by all! (And since invitation emails had gone out to the entire population of the island as well as few alumni... that really did mean all.)

Well, let it not be said Atton wouldn't exploit a chance to get some drinks and maybe repress that the weekend ever happened. Okay, it might turn out to be an exercise for his fake-fake-ID, but hey.

He wandered in and didn't even bother to look for the birthday people in particular.

Meanwhile Peter was trying to rack his political lizard brain for the identities of the party-throwers. After all, this was an excellent moment to do some networking for his superpowered-bodyguards plan.

He'd even put his phone in his pocket for once.

Sia couldn't stay long, as she'd promised Jessica distractions, but she wasn't going to miss her roommate's birthday party. And living with Juliet meant the party didn't exactly surprise her, but she definitely appreciated the work that had gone into it.

Jim, being Juliet's little sibling and all, wasn't really surprised to see a party of hers decked out like this. It made him chuckle a bit but he figured if he had money, he'd spoil himself too.

He figured he'd make a run by the table of presents, drop his gift off and then wander back over to grab a drink and see who else was at the party.

Karolina had never met the birthday people. But since it looked like the invite had gone out all over, she'd braved showing up, and was now looking around curiously in her simple party dress.

The view of the venue actually reminded her a little bit of home.

Of course Stacey was here, and looking cute. Because she'd kind of sort of technically got stood up a little maybe in Africa, and that meant she had to look good. It was like a law.

She was really liking the party, too. She bet Watson never even had parties like this. She'd have to rub that in Kristy's face later.

It was all top-notch stuff, not usual shoddy catering fare. Also, the cake was huge and intricate.

Natalie wasn't sure why she was here. Maybe it was that she could feel herself slowly going crazy from staying in her room, now that the rain cloud had cleared. She'd tell anyone who asked that she was here just for the cake, though.

But she wasn't expecting anyone to ask, because she (and her lack of party clothes) was keeping to the sidelines. Barely picking at the food on her plate.

He was texting while he walked and pretty much missed the giant banner announcing that it was a birthday party, though. Oops.

It was kind of hard to buy a gift when you figured the birthday girl (and her brother) had everything they really needed and getting them something from the future was out of the question since you were in the present now.

Still, Jim tried. Everyone liked chocolate, right? And buying a good sized box meant they could share and it'd last for awhile.
