Caritas, Friday Evening

The highlight of Mike's Valentine's Day evening had been Adam drunk-dialing him. He was fine with that, though (although he'd have preferred not to listen to Adam's drunken ramblings). He'd still gotten flowers earlier in the day, which had amused him, and he was in an okay mood when he came into work today.

He checked out last night's specials, and kept a couple of them, while adding a couple of his own:

"You sent me flowers!" Thanks, Laurie, he probably knew that, but still -- she was beaming at Mike as she took a seat on a barstool. "That was sweet of you. Also, hi!"

Mike laughed, nodding at her in greeting. "Hey. And you got me flowers too! It would've been rude not to reciprocate."

Never mind that that made no sense, since he'd had no way of knowing she'd do that too. He was probably joking.

"That's how I felt too!" Laurie assured him. "Also, I don't normally send dudes flowers, but it's for like, a good cause or whatever, right? Plus flowers are nice and they make your home look like it came out of a magazine!"

Yeah, Mike's house would totally be featured in Better Homes and Gardens any day now.

Yeah, Mike snorted. "Not my house." His old house? He could've seen that happening, kind of. But not this one. "Think it's gonna take a little more work and flowers to make that happen. But the thought's appreciated."

"Your house is not that bad," Laurie assured him. "We just need to kick Derek out for like a week and paint it and get rid of whatever lurkiness he's decided it needs."

"And then he comes back and takes down everything he doesn't like, then buries it in the backyard." He wasn't even kidding, entirely. "We had a, uh, a few creative differences at Ikea."

"So let him keep a creepy corner," Laurie declared. "He can get some weird-looking furniture that he can keep in his brooding room or whatever and the rest of the house can be perfectly pleasant!"

"I don't know, I think I'm gonna just focus on the more pressing issues first," Mike said, shrugging. "Like the whole second floor."

Where he still barely dared to go because he was afraid of falling through the floor.

"But, you know. It's a work in progress. How was your Valentine's Day?"

"Meh." Laurie shrugged. "I kind of ignore it, usually. More all about Half Price Candy Day, you know? Like, why do we need a special day to be all cute like that?"

Laurie sort of lived in a world of hearts and cupids, yes.

Given how quiet the Devil's Nest was, Allie left Tiny in charge and made her way over to Caritas.

"Hey Mike."

"It was so not busy that Tiny decided to tell me tales of his love life," Allie shuddered. "Definitely not what I wanted to hear."

Mike made a sympathetic face. "Yeah, I can see how... that would not be the greatest addition to your evening. Also now I'm pretty glad Tino didn't show tonight."

Allie laughed. "Can you imagine the two of them together? Only maybe not. We don't need that sort of drama."

Pulling out a stool, she took a seat at the bar. "So there were flowers when I woke up yesterday."

His smirk said he was just kidding.

"Honestly though," Allie said sincerely. "I didn't realize Valentine's could be for more then couples. The flowers were a nice surprise."

Mike gave that an easy shrug. "Couples, love, friendship. I figure it's kind of a free-for-all. I mean, I don't feel like putting restrictions on it."

There were things in his past that made him value his friends. Valentine's Day was a good excuse to show it.

"I like that idea. I'll keep it in mind for next year." Surprisingly the thought that she might still be here in a year wasn't as disturbing as it once might have been.

"Of course now I'm wandering what other holidays and traditions are coming up that I should know about?"
