Caritas, Friday Evening

Well, things were normal again, and had remained so through the week. So Mike was celebrating. By eating jelly beans at work. Now, don't judge, jelly beans were awesome. And he'd worked his ass off at this one construction site for most of the week, and he deserved nice things! So. Jelly beans.

And because he liked being consistent, they ended up influencing the specials board, too:

It may have been his past at the strip club influencing his love of theme nights.

I want candy!

Where your bartender is having some excellent jelly beans.

You know what, sometimes even the least alcohol-prone teenagers couldn't resist a bar that didn't card. Especially when the drinks were candy-themed, because really.

So that would be a Gert making her way into Caritas this evening, and doing the awkward short-person climb onto a bar stool, yes.

"Oh, it's you," she said, briefly surprised to recognize the guy from the dinosaur world. "...Hi."

Mike didn't look surprised. He greeted her with the same kind of easy smile he greeted most people with. "Yeah, it's me," he said, a little amused. "Hey. Arsenic, right?"

It was the only name he'd ever gotten out of her. And you didn't immediately forget a name like that.

Oh, right. She had told him that was her name. Well, Gert didn't have a problem going by Arsenic for the evening. On the contrary, there was something really appealing about it.

"Yeah," she confirmed after only the slightest pause. "And you're Mike." Which was easier to forget, but the whole dungeon experience had been memorable, one-syllable names included. "Fancy seeing you here in a real establishment and not surrounded by foliage."

Also, fully-dressed.

Mike snorted and gestured around the bar. "Yeah, this is kinda more my uh, natural habitat. No offence to dinosaur-infested jungles, of course."

"I don't know; between dinosaur jungles and zombie bars, I see it as a pretty tough call," Gert mused. "Though the A/C definitely swings the balance to be pro-this place."

"Zombies have never tried to eat me," Mike pointed out. "I mean, they've tried to murder with some really fucking bad music from time to time, but no bitings. That and the A/C make this place a total winner."

"Plus here there are candy drinks," Gert added lightly. "Speaking of which, can I get one of those?"

Because she could, pretty much.

"Though not all dinosaurs bite, you know."

"Well, some of them are vegetarian, right?"

He shrugged.

"Which kind would you like? Drink, I mean. Not dinosaur."

Gert didn't really know the difference between either of the drinks advertised, so she shrugged one shoulder. "Whichever's easier to make."

A candy drink was a candy drink, right?

"But yeah, most of them are," she added, pleased that he had asked in the present tense. "So their teeth are blunt enough that you probably don't have to worry about being bitten. Have you seen that girl Karla's dinosaur?"

He got to work on making her a Jelly Bean. Easy, just two ingredients and all. "Wait, we have more than one dinosaur roaming around the island?"

He sounded only mildly surprised. This was Fandom, after all.

"Yep." And Gert had thought she'd be so special! "Hers is little, though. Kind of like a teacup pterodactyl."

"Huh." He mulled that over while he was fixing the drink. "Still pretty big for something that's supposed to be extinct."

"Yeah, but 'extinct' doesn't mean anything on a multidimensional nexus full of people from different timelines," Gert pointed out. "Not to mention there's bound to be people here with pet dragons and unicorns, so two people running around with pets that technically died out in your timeline a while back isn't necessarily weird by everyone's standards."

Her tone wasn't annoyed, though; if anything, she liked having the opportunity to talk about this.

Mike still held up a hand as he slid her drink over. "Didn't mean it like that, anyway." Because he talked from his own scope of experience, not in multiversals. But give it a year or two. "Still pretty exotic."

"Yup."

Hey, it wasn't like her own universe had a ton of people with pet dinosaurs either.

Gert took a sip of the drink. "'S pretty good."

Kitty was being social today, because I could.

"Candy theme," she said. "That's a new one."

Mike held up his bag of jelly beans, as if that explained it all.

Oh right, there were words too. "Gotta work with what you've got."

"I hope you brought enough for the rest of the class," she teased. "Or are those what the specials are for?"

"Oh, they are." He still set the bag back on the bar and nudged it towards her. "But you're my boss so I'll make an exception with the real deal."

"You are my favorite employee who gives me jellybeans by far," Kitty smiled, snagging a couple.

"I know the competition has to be fierce," Mike quipped, grinning. "So, how've you been, Kitty? Get hit with the weird last weekend?"

"Yep. Married to Clint, had a daughter, ran a school sometimes," Kitty nodded. "I guess it missed you?"

Mike chuckled a bit and shook his head. "Well, I wouldn't go that far... I mean, I did have to experience the utter joy that was dealing with being the youngest person in my household all of a sudden."

She hadn't actually thought about that before now. "Ohh, that had to be weird."

"Yeah. I didn't mind that, really." If you didn't count the utter weirdness of it all. "'Cause I prefer not to be reminded that I'm usually not. But it was still... so fucking strange, man."

"I'm amazed you didn't tape it all to embarrass us later," Kitty said.

"I think I need to invest in a camera just for that purpose," Mike admitted. "Maybe then I could move past my confusion a little quicker and actually profit from the situation."

He was excellent at rolling with whatever the island did, but he usually needed a little bit of time to get on top of the situation.

"You should. Make it a thing. See weird thing, snap a picture, figure out how to react."

She said this because she didn't live with him.

"That's gonna be the death of me. You remember that, right?"

Derek would grump him to death!

"I found the key to my office," she said. "The couch is still there!"

She was terrible. Terrible. "Okay, I'll consider it. But I still can't promise anything. And with any luck, I'm gonna be the one hit with the next bit of weird and this'll all be a total moot point."

"That is the first time I've heard anyone say that here," Kitty told him.

"What, that they'd be lucky to get hit with the weird?"

Probably because it was a ridiculous thing to say.

Kitty nodded. "Yep. It's a pretty unique point of view."

Mike shrugged in return. "Well, I wouldn't have to be confused about anything for once."

And it was pretty hard to embarrass him with the weird.

"I'm going to check back in with you about this after you turn six for a weekend," she said.

Candy?

Candy!

In conclusion, candy.
