Outside the Radio Station, all day

Once the squirrel telethon started going, it was clear it wouldn't stop any time soon. Not until they had enough rum to satisfy themselves. After being carried out of the radio booth, Jessica hit up an ATM to bring twenty bucks back. It was only fair. The squirrels were planning on being entertaining. And sure enough, by the time she got back to the radio station, there was a kiddie pool set up outside with one of the squirrels water skiing in it.

Probably more impressive was that a squirrel was driving the speedboat pulling the skier, and there were other squirrels dressed up as sharks for the skier to jump. And you know what? It was pretty great when it happened.

So don't mind Jessica. She was just going to be watching the show today, until the point where she'd have to move her stuff to the campsite.

Hannibal probably could have gotten someone else to come take care of his plants over the weekend, but honestly he found this place much more interesting than Baltimore most days, so it wasn't like coming here was a hardship.

Case in point - while it didn't exactly violate the laws of physics, a water-skiing squirrel was definitely something he'd never thought to encounter before.

"I wouldn't think they could get enough speed in such a small pool." Or that they knew how to drive a motorboat, but they did live here, after all.

"It's all about scale," Jessica pointed out. "At human proportions, this is a small lake."

"Hm." Hannibal wasn't convinced, but as clearly it was working, there didn't seem any point in arguing otherwise.

"Did they decide to take a break from spying on everyone?" Did they even do that?

"I assume that there are still plenty out there doing their jobs. But these guys," Jessica said, "want more rum for the group, and they're willing to do whatever they need to get donations."

"They drink rum?" Of course they did. Why wouldn't squirrels drink? He was thinking he needed one himself. "I thought the reporters' alcohol of choice was bourbon," he added dryly.

"You see, it's a pirate radio station," Jessica said. "As far as I can tell, it was founded by an actual pirate, the kind with scurvy. So these reporters prefer rum."

"Naturally." Hannibal shook his head. "So, are they taking donations of money or of rum?" It never hurt to get the press on your side. Even if they were rather...small and furry.

"Either or. Giving them rum directly just cuts out the middle man," Jessica said."

"Well, I don't have any rum with me presently, but I'll be glad to help out." Hannibal pulled out his wallet and checked, then held out a fifty. "For the fund."

"If they end up making a plaque to commemorate this event, I'm sure your name will be on it," Jessica said, taking the money. "It may not be spelled right since, you know, drunken squirrels. But still. It's the thought that counts."

Hannibal winced. "Please, don't let them feel they have to." He shuddered to think what they might come up with.

"They're gonna do what they're gonna do. I'm just here to watch," Jessica said.

Jaye tended to listen to radio live, just in case something terrible happened that she had to ignore deal with ignore, so she'd heard about the telethon, and headed down to the station.

Once she got there, she opened her mouth and closed it a couple times and raised her hand in a 'what the hell' gesture.

And finally sighed and got out her camera.

"I'll be honest, I don't know where they got a kiddie pool or an air pump, but I'm glad they did," Jessica said when she noticed Jaye stopping by.

"For some reason I want to blame Tino," Jaye admitted.

"The guy from the bar?" Jessica asked. "Is he friends with the squirrels or something?"

"He deals in rum," said Jaye, who also did, but Tino dealt with it more. "And he's easy to blame things on. Mostly the second thing."

"Well, then this all adds up," Jessica said. "Not that it matters since this is fun to watch no matter what. But still."

"I mean... where'd they learn to waterski?"

Important question.

"I just assume it's an inherent squirrel skill," Jessica said. "I know I've seen video of it before."

"I thought those videos were taped by sick people who'd trained the squirrels for a life of internet notoriety," Jaye said.

"My version's happier," Jessica decided. "So I'm going to stick with that. Natural athletes."

"Yeah, it's too bad they don't have a chance to use those waterskiing skills much, being landlocked and all." She liked her version better.

"That's why it's important that they use those skills when they have the chance," Jessica said.
