The Perk, Sunday Evening

The baristas were arguing over something called fantasy football. When they wanted to know Allie's opinion of Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers as a quarterback pick, she wisely chose to plead ignorance and retreated to a table with her coffee and book.

Kitty got all the way to the counter before the barista asked her about her pick. She answered "A large iced coffee." When they said they were talking about football, she said, "I know, I'm talking about a large iced coffee" and then they gave up on her.

"Ah, that time of year again," she said to Allie as she waited for her drink.

"This is a regular thing?" Allie asked. "I honestly have no idea what they're talking about."

"Fantasy football. It's when guys- mostly- get together and make up their own teams of existing players and bet on who comes out on top," Kitty explained. "And for those guys, it may be all you hear about from them till January."

Allie considered the guys she knew on the island. "So in other words, not something I really need to worry about unless I'm in the mood for coffee."

"Probably not. And even then, there's like a fifty-fifty shot that it's a good idea to bring earplugs when dealing with the baristas anyway," said Kitty, giving a 'sorry' look at the one who chose that moment to give her her coffee.

"I don't mind. It's entertaining in a way," she shrugged. "I just don't like not knowing if that makes sense?" Because even after almost a year on the island there was still so much she didn't know.

"So how was the picnic? Any interesting new people?"

"Iron-clad supervillain who goes by Doctor Doom so you know he's a people person," Kitty said with a shrug. "One of Stiles' friends that I know is here, and my teaching buddy seems okay. I probably could have socialized more."

And then there'd been the Derek thing and then she'd just wanted to hang out with her boyfriend for a while. Socialization could happen later.

"At least you got out. Unless they move the picnic till evening hours, I have to wait to meet people till they wander into the bar." Which wasn't such a bad thing. Crowds weren't Allie's favorite thing.

"Yeah. We get them a lot where I'm from," Kitty said. "Though I doubt he's the bar type, so you might get a pass on him."

"Small favors to be thankful for," Allie replied. "I'll pass on the supervillians. But I wouldn't mind if this other vampire that's on the island turned up."

"Two actually. Navaan, who works at the clinic." The distasteful expression on Allie's face should make it pretty clear what she thought of Navaan. "I don't know who the other one is. I met him the day those weird creatures were attacking and we were all deaf. Obviously I didn't get his name but he was very traditional. All in black, with a cape."

"Yeah, I'm not a fan," she admitted. Yet she liked Bruce perfectly fine. "Eh, guess there's gotta at least be a few couple around here I don't like, right?"

"I suppose. Although it seems like there's way more people that are just plain nice." Allie smiled, slightly bemused. "It's really weird to get used to when you come from a place that's a lot more cut throat."
