Caritas, Friday Evening

There was a sign posted outside Caritas tonight.

MUSIC, COMEDY, WHATEVER,

*as in mic(rophone), but bartender is open to suggestions

Hey, Mike had been listening to the radio, he knew they had a busker around now, and it just seemed like a fun idea in general. People liked their entertainment, some people liked their performing, and Mike liked both. And he liked trying to draw people in, even with the guaranteed full house of tomorrow night's speed dating.

Tino was grumbling about something, but wasn't he always? Mike paid him no mind.

"Sure," she said with a smile. "You're the expert. What's good here?"

Enough time with Nick meant she was curious if he'd be grumpy about it or not.

"Everything's good here." He was that kind of bartender. Also, as ungrumpy as they got. "Do you prefer fancy drinks or like... easy classics, like shots?"

"Let's go with fancy," Jess decided. "Bonus if it's pink."

Naturally.

"I can do that," Mike nodded. In fact, he got right to making a drink like that. It was going to take a moment but it was also going to be good.

Shush, he was confident. "So, you're new, right? Did you come in with the last batch of school folk?"

"Yep, I'm the new girl." ~~Yes, I had to.~~ "But hey, at least I'm not the only one who doesn't know anyone except their roommate, right?" That's what she kept telling herself, anyway.

"Right," Mike agreed with a little chuckle. "Of course, you've met me now, and I'm not your roommate, so things are looking up for you in that respect."

"Tell me about it." Because Mike was pretty. It was totally worth putting on makeup to go out. "How long have you been here?"

"'Bout a year," he said, giving her a little gesture of vagueness to go with that with one hand while the other was putting a bottle away. "Long enough to feel like I know this place. And not feel weirded out just because it's not Florida."

"Yeah, I'm sure the lack of palm trees and Disney would throw a person off... I don't actually know anything about Florida," she admitted.

"Close enough," Mike said, mostly because he was nice. And got homesick when people were too knowledgeable, anyway. He pushed a drink across the bar to her. "There you go. Hope it's pink enough."

"It's so cute!" She actually thought the drink was cute, just don't ask her how that was possible.

Mike thought it was cute that she thought it was cute. Somehow it all worked out.

"Cute enough that we're gonna get you up on that stage?"

"I don't know what to sing. I have too many ideas and the frontrunner now was a Whole New World."

Despite not knowing what to sing, that answer was immediate.

Mike was going to look amused at that, yes. "I don't know, it sounds to me like you have a pretty solid idea."

"I mean, I could," Jess said. "Though it is a duet..."

"Oh I don't know," Mike said, cocking his head to the side. "I was a little too cool for Disney when Aladdin came out, I'm not sure I remember much of it..."

No, he knew the song. By heart.

"No one is ever too cool for Disney," Jess pointed out. "I bet you'd know it as soon as you heard the music."

"That's easy for you to say, you look like a Disney princess to begin with!" Mike argued. Well, 'argued'. Without much effort. "But, okay, I might be convinced to do it. Even though it won't net me a discount and I may, in fact, not remember any of the lyrics."

"All I ask is that you give it the ol' college try," Jess smiled.

"Do you think my ol' worked-construction-instead-of-college try will be good enough?" Mike wondered as he moved to get out from behind the bar. "'Cause that's all I've got."

"Sure," Jess nodded. "But then I recommend just going ahead and doing the YMCA if you forget the words."

Mike made a mock offended face. Even while offering her his arm to escort her to the stage because he was a goddamn gentleman.

"Oh, I've got way better moves than the fucking YMCA to save myself with."

"Good," she said, taking his arm. "So do I."

No she didn't. She had the Chicken Dance.

Mike moves were a little on a different level from the Chicken Dance, yes.

"Yeah?" he asked as he was leading her towards the stage. The zombies perked up, for an undead definition of perking up. "Well, then this should go just fine, shouldn't it?"
