The streets of Fandom, Monday afternoon

So, it'd been bad enough when Roland had to skip busking yesterday (involuntary mittens and stringed instruments don't mix well). Now, as he walked along, he had to dodge randomly caroling townspeople.

It'd be less creepy if some of them didn't look either freaked out or resigned when they burst into song at him.

He hadn't been planning to start into the holiday music just yet (there was just so much of it that was so terrible that he liked to put it off as long as his audience would let him), but even when he started out trying to sing something nice off of "The Joshua Tree", he ended up doing a cover of Bono's "Baby Please Come Home".

He was slowly beginning to realize that the island itself might just be his most insistent audience. And if it wanted Christmas music, it was apparently going to get them, whether Roland liked it or not.

"Isn't it getting a little cold for this shit?" Dean was so helpful.

Roland made a show of giving that some thought, then shrugged. "I'm from Canada, man."

He felt that should explain it at least a little.

"So you have cold powers? Maybe a red uniform?"

". . . You're one of those Americans who thinks Canada is the United States' hat, aren't you?"

"Pretty much." Sorry he wasn't sorry, Roland.

"Nice to see that so little has changed in the last 24 years," Roland remarked. "You gonna request a song or something?"

"You know any AC/DC?"

Well, have they done a Christmas song?

Well, it wasn't like Roland could be surprised by that. Dean was basically a weird combo of bowed strings and electric bass riffs.

"You want me to play AC/DC on an accoustic guitar?" Roland asked. Then, because, hell, it was at least more of a challenge than the people who kept asking for "Jingle Bell Rock", he shrugged. "Alrighty, then."

He played a few test chords, and then found himself singing "Mistress for Christmas". Which was a nice trick, considering that he didn't actually remember ever hearing the song before, himself.

"Not bad, not bad." Because it wasn't Jingle Bell Rock. No one wanted that song. It was evil.

Roland was of the opinion that most Christmas music written after about 1890 was evil. And much of that which was written before it.

"I didn't even know that one," he said, looking a little disconcertedly at his guitar. "Must've been from after my time."

"Yeah, I kinda doubt most people have heard that one." Philistines.

"Well, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll use it in a holiday superhero movie someday."

"Long as it's not in the new Space Battles." HE WOULD NEVER FORGIVE THIS.

"They're really still making those? I was kind of hoping the Internet --" Roland still pronounced that like an old fogey, yes, "-- made up."

"You know, once upon a time, Hollywood actually came up with new ideas."

It was amazing how quickly a 27 year old could end up sounding like he was 50 something.

Maybe he could save up for a walker to complete the look.

"Not anymore." And Dean spent decades in Hell, so he was also an old man. So.

"Uh, couple years ago." Ask him about his prunes and FiberOne.

"Funny," Roland mused. "I would have guessed the late seventies."

Those guitar riffs were very classic rock.
