Devil's Nest, Friday Evening

The island was being weird, but that didn't mean Allie was going to ignore the fact that she had to work.

It did mean her sword was resting on the bar within easy reach.

For some reason the DJ decided to play all the music Allie had ever seemed to like, while Tiny was busy cleaning glasses quietly behind the bar.

It was almost an early Christmas miracle.

"I'm gonna need a really big glass of beer," Kaidan said as he entered.

If he looked a little frazzled-- well, Dean and a bunch of Bullymongs. That would do it.

Tiny...was already pouring, but he quickly switched out the glass for a larger pint sized glass.

"The weirdness getting to you?" Allie asked as she gave Kaidan a quick once over to make sure he wasn't visibly hurt.

"Been spending a lot of time out on patrol," Kaidan said, grabbing a stool to sit down on. "It's hairy out there."

"It is," she nodded as Tiny placed the beer on the bar in front of Kaidan. "I was out all of last night and Wednesday night and I'll go back out again when I close up here. Any idea what's causing all this?"

"The crazy corporation who left open all the doors to their home dimension?" Kaidan offered. He reached for the beer and took a long sip. Gulp. Something.

"Of course. That explains everything." Allie rubbed at her eyes and sighed. "I suppose it beats waking in our pajamas, in a weird dungeon without weapons."

Always look on the bright side of the weirdness.

"Yeah, at least I get home every night," Kaidan said - a little dryly. "Not that I sleep."

"Why not? It's good for you. Even I give in and sleep every day." Allie was just going to ignore the fact that after a certain point, she really didn't have a choice about whether or not she slept. It just happened.

"Because I get worried," Kaidan said. "About the kids, about the island... about Dean running off and doing something stupid..."

The last one was probably the most rational fear.

"I get being worried. But not sleeping's not going to change anything," she pointed out. "It's not the first time the island's gone through something like this and I doubt it'll be the last. It'll survive. As for Dean, I don't know him, but it doesn't mean I won't help you lock him in a closet if you think it'll keep him out of trouble."

Kaidan snorted. "Probably not," he said.

He shook his head and took another sip of his beer. "Worry isn't rational. Neither is insomnia. I should sleep, but I can't, y'know?"

"Well if you decide to try anyway. I'll help." No, that would probably not be the best way for Allie the vampire and Dean the hunter to meet. It would only end in tears. Or possibly bloodshed.

"I do know," Allie said, growing a more serious. "It's not so much of a thing now but back before, in the Fringe, there were a lot of nights I didn't sleep. Too much thinking for my brain to shut down."

Oh god no that would be a horrible idea.

"I'm used to this kind of tension," Kaidan explained. "Dealing with danger like this... it's normal. But it also takes me back."

"Which has to be upsetting, frustrating, annoying?" she prompted. "are you doing okay with it? Besides not sleeping?"

"Yeah. Like you said, it's not as bad as the dungeon," Kaidan said. He rubbed at his forehead. "Or Saren. I just consider this a quiet place... it takes some adjusting when that changes." He tilted his head. "How about you? You doing okay?"

Allie waved her hand dismissively. "I'm fine. No one's playing mind games like in dungeon. It's all pretty straight forward. If it's trying to eat you, kill it. And I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a small part of me that wasn't reveling in the fight."

"Just don't get too carried away," Kaidan warned.

"It's why I'm here and not out there right now." Even though Allie was fairly certain Eric wouldn't have had a problem with her skipping work to go out and hunt, she felt better making the conscious choice to put it off for the time being.
