"Do you think they have Swedish meatballs I can take home?" Ben asked Ender as they found a spot to sit. "My chair needs to be refueled."

It was possible he was saying this just to mess with Ender, but he just loved the "sometimes I wonder what on Earth I was thinking" look on Ender's face, too.

Ender gave him the look that said he had no idea why he even knew Ben. "It's a pizza place," he said. "Not IKEA."

"True, but IKEA's far away," Ben said. "I was hoping they were into fusion cuisine."

"You can try finding a pizza that has meatballs on it," Ender said dryly.

"Do you think non-Swedish meatballs will work?" Ben asked. "I should ask Barry."

"I think maybe you should stop worrying about your chair that eats meatballs," Ender said.

Ben smiled at him. "All right," he said. "So, pizza with veggies?"

"For me, yes please," Ender said, picking up the menu.

"I could eat some of it too," Ben offered, a silent apology for being ridiculous about the chair.

"We'll get a meat lover's, too," Ender said, relenting, "and we'll share."

Ben poked him with his foot under the table. "Perfect," he said, smiling.

Ender tapped Ben's foot with his. "Go place our order."

"You want a water, too?" Ben checked as he got up.

"Please," Ender said.

Ben kissed him on the top of the head, pausing for a moment to be glad he could do that here, and then wandered up to the counter. A few minutes later he returned with two waters (and a milkshake, shh) and sat back down. "It'll be a couple minutes."

"I can live with that," Ender said. He took a quick sip of water and smiled over towards the milkshake. "Couldn't resist?"

"Don't tell the ice cream guys," Ben said, smiling back.

"I won't," Ender said. "Just this once."

"I appreciate it," Ben said, grinning. "How was your walk last night?"

"I wound up speaking to a student," Ender said lightly. "Otherwise, it was... calming. Gave me a chance to clear my mind."

"I'm glad," Ben said earnestly. "It's a tough day."

"Tougher on the dead than on me, I'd imagine," Ender said.

[momslilassassin]

"Other than the ghosts, the rest of them are pretty much beyond remembering things," Ben said quietly. "It's harder on the living."

"This living person is responsible for many of these deaths," Ender said. "It feels wrong to feel sorry for myself about it."

Ben pursed his lips at that. "You don't have to feel sorry for yourself," he said finally. "They made choices to get where they were. Honor their choices."

"I try," Ender said softly, and took a sip of his water.
