MCA - Thursday Morning

Sometimes Derek remembered that he was somehow the manager of an apartment complex. You know. During those times of the year when people were moving.

He hated those times of year.

But, dutifully, he was at the place to make sure it hadn't collapsed on itself or something. Maybe get new tenants.

Where Derek was glaring at the paperwork he didn't want to do, but was doing anyway.

See? This is why he squatted in abandoned buildings.

Atton knocked on the door. He needed a place to stay, and he didn't really feel like being in one building all by himself, so... he was trying his luck.

Besides, this building had a parking space for the ship up top. That was useful.

"Hey."

"Hey."

Customer service was his number one priority.

At least the guy was to the point. Or something. "You got any vacancies?" Atton asked casually. "I just got a job up at the school."

"Three," Derek replied, looking down at the vacancies. Oh, paperwork. You've proven yourself this time. "You're a teacher?"

"Yep," Atton said. "Well, as of next week."

He shrugged. "I'll take any of those three." Beat. "Wait, which one's the biggest?"

"Apartment 4 has two bedrooms." Which meant something.

"Give me that one," Atton said.

What? He'd been stuck on a spaceship with a bunch of other people for a long time. He was going to enjoy his space.

"Yours then," Derek replied with a shrug. He dug through a pile of paper to find the keys to the place before handing them over.

"That was easy," Atton said, blinking.

Not that he could argue with Derek's approach here.

He took the keys. "You need a deposit or something?"

He was a simple man and a terrible manager. "You planning to trash the place?"

"Why would I do that?" Atton said. "I live there."

As of like five seconds ago.

"You want to question the stupidity of people?"

"No, then we'll be here all day," Atton drawled.

He kinda liked this guy.

Because they were both misanthropes!

Derek huffed in amusement. "Enjoy teaching."

"I won't," Atton said, and with that parting shot, he ambled out of the office to go get his ship.

"I didn't know you were my landlord!"

Irene had just been passing through the lobby on her way to go shopping on the mainland -- she needed teacher clothes, now. Maybe she'd invest in some very brainy-looking spectacles that she didn't need at all, even! But she was stopped short when she saw that someone was in the manager's office, simply because she'd been meaning to introduce herself to her mysterious super. "You wear so many hats, Derek. I had no idea."

"It wasn't by choice."

He'd been attacked by a robot!

Of course he had. Oh, Derek.

"I feel like that happens to you a lot," she noted, shaking her head.

Because he was a middle child.

"I don't fix things, so don't get any ideas."

Irene pouted at that. "Then what good are you? I was so looking forward to ogling you while you resand the floors in my kitchen, or something."

Irene didn't know much about fixing things, herself, clearly.

"I'll hire someone." Someone fat and hairy. That was deeply implied.

"Someone pretty." Implications were meant to be ignored, as far as she was concerned. "Maybe even a lady, if I get a vote!"

Because of course Irene thought she got a vote.

"If you find one, sure."

It was possible, after all. The island was too pretty to be real.

"Why have I got to find her?" Irene wondered. "That sounds very much like your job."

Though it was possibly not his job to appeal to her aesthetic preferences in his choice of handyperson.

Alright, there is one open apartment with no dibs on it at the moment. Let me know if there ought to be any changes!

You can open up Riley's apartment too since he's gone back to DC and canon and won't be needing it!
