Kitty was having a bleh day at work. Last week had been the worst time she'd has as staff at Xavier's, she'd just gotten back from dealing with it, and for the first time since she rejoined she wasn't looking forward to seeing what was waiting for her when she got there tomorrow after working late tonight.

So today she was entirely just playing at work, which right now meant dropping Skittles into half a glass of vodka just to see if and when the dye would turn it colors. Also, then at some point there'd be vodka-infused Skittles. No stress in this activity.

"Shouldn't those be gummi bears?" Mike greeted her as he made his way to the bar. "Pretty sure I've heard something about gummi bears and booze."

"That is a thing, but I think it's to soak the gummi bears up with vodka. This is me trying to turn the vodka colors, and maybe soak the Skittles up with it, too, we'll see what happens," she said. "Hi, I'm having a blow-off day. What can I get you?"

Kitty sucked at blow-off days.

Mike snickered. "I don't think you know what a blow-off day means."

She was already doing all too much work!

He rubbed his chin. He was actually rocking a little bit of facial hair for once. For reasons. "Think I'll just have a Coke, thanks. I'm gonna start easy and see if the mood for candy-type vodka appears."

"I could let you be the test audience," she offered, getting a glass. "I don't actually want to try it?"

"Maybe." He shrugged, actually taking his seat at the bar. "I mean, I got us the cake vodka when Laurie was here. That was actually surprisingly good."

"I see a theme happening in a few weeks," Kitty said thoughtfully, pouring the Coke and sliding it over. "Once we're past the St. Patrick's everything."

"What, a vodka theme?" he asked as he picked up his new drink. "Vodka in all the colors of the rainbow, and all the flavors of your childhood?"

"I was thinking more 'cake vodka drinks' but I think you're on to something with the childhood thing," Kitty said. "There's probably some I've never even heard of."

"Oh, most likely," Mike nodded. "There's a ton of random booze stuff out there. Laurie would've probably been able to give a list, but luckily, Google exists."

"This is totally what I'm going to be doing whenever I get a break from stressy stuff at my other other job," she said. "Thank you."

He smiled and nodded. "Any time." And then... "There's stressy stuff at your other other job?"

She had an 'other other job'?

"The school in New York," she said. "Things blew up pretty good. I was there most of the week playing counselor."

"Oh." He glanced down at his Coke, then back up again. "Everyone okay? I mean, apart from apparently needing counseling and all?"

"Uh, our Danger Room killed a kid," Kitty said, frowning. "And then used that torment our other students while we were trapped in there. And then kicked all our asses."

"... What?"

You know, for a Fandomite, that should've been less surprising and shocking. And yet.

"God, I'm sorry."

"Thanks," she said. "Aside from that, everyone's okay or got healed up, but there's some serious trauma, and some serious mistrust and resentment, and also we have to rebuild a bunch of the mansion and I do not want to work on the tech for redoing the Danger Room just yet. So, vodka Skittles are happening."

"Yeah, I think you're cool to do that right now." Was that a thing people said? he was kind of out of his depth here. "And uh, I was thinking of having a party, maybe this Friday? If you think you'd like to unwind more. I mean, if you have the time."

"I will be there," Kitty said immediately. "Sorry to unload on you and everything, by the way. Fun's good right now."

"No, no, it's cool," Mike assured her, shaking his head. "It's fine, it's the least I can do."

Listening was easy. Especially now his own head seemed to be screwed on straight, for a nice change from last year.

"Party's gonna have a mustache theme. Should be fun and relaxed."

Kitty blinked. "A mustache theme? I'm not sure I can grow one before Friday."

Mike quirked a half smile. "Don't worry, I'm gonna have fake ones ready for people in your situation." He rubbed his chin again. Mmm, scruff. "I'm only working on mine because Derek told me he'd hate it."

And that was why he was going the extra mile and going for a goatee type situation as well.

"You're working on facial hair out of spite?" Kitty smiled.

"Yes."

His relationship with Derek in a nutshell, really. Or just his level of maturity.

"You know what, I approve of this," Kitty decided. "I may even compliment it in front of him."

It was probably tacky to hold his fist out for a bump over the bar, right?

He did not give a damn.

"Excellent."

"I feel like you should have said that with your fingers steepled instead," she said, bumping his fist, "but I'll take it."

"If I manage a twirlable mustache by Friday," he replied, picking his Coke up again, "I promise I will do that then."

"I wish you all the good vibes for a twirlable mustache," she promised. Because seriously, picture it. That was fantastic.

Mike nodded. Really, it was almost a bow.

"I'll do my best. Worst case scenario, I slap on a fake mustache just for that."

"And now you know what your picture in my phone will be after Friday," she said.

"I've had worse." Way worse. Ones you couldn't show to kids kind of worse. "I'll try and look stylish. And probably serve some funky kind of vodka."

"And you managed to bring that around full circle," Kitty said. "I'm impressed."

"Thanks, I try."

Working with fun topics to avoid the depressing stuff? It was like his life's purpose sometimes.

"Seriously though, there'll be cake vodka, probably."

"Never let anybody tell you you're not the best," she told him. This was totally going to get her through the next two days.
