Caritas- Tuesday

Tino had thought it'd be a good idea to take the Perk's recent sizing issues and capitalize on it.

Which meant Kitty was hurriedly taking down the "specials: bucket of liquor" signs and trying to explain the many, many reasons this was not happening.

Happy Tuesday.

Éponine had ~~not at all been outside and peering in the windows for a while~~ just happened to pass by in time to notice the last of the specials signs, and wandered in .

"D'you run out of buckets already, then?"

Someone had maybe been hoping. What?

"No, the buckets were a good way to go broke," Kitty explained. "Someone- Tino- apparently wants a lot taken out of his paycheck."

"Ah. Damn," Éponine said wryly. "Though you're right at that, I'd guess. Not to mention, think of the mess! So much spilling. Though maybe you ought to get little buckets -- not real ones, but d'you know those ice cream bowls shaped like helmets, like I saw them selling at a baseball game when I was in Baltimore a while ago? Something like that, as a special one night."

"Or the fish bowls. Those are always cute," Kitty agreed. "How about the first drink's on me since the buckets are gone."

"That suits me," Éponine decided with a laugh, and settled down at the bar. "Perhaps Tino ought to wear one as a hat for the rest of the night, just for this. You've enough to keep you busy these days, god knows, without him adding anything on to it.""

"Aside from wedding stuff I haven't been doing a ton with, I haven't been too busy lately," Kitty admitted. "That'll be in the fall. What can I get you, by the way?"

"Ah! I thought that might be taking up all of your time lately, planning," Éponine said, then shrugged. "Let's see . . . ah, yes, let's have a rum and Coke, I think. No need for anything like a bucket there."

. . . though oooh, a bucket-sized rum and Coke.

"On it," Kitty said, turning to get the drink together. "Yeah, planning is pretty low-key. Neither of us want a big deal thing, and also planning is scary."

"I'd have thought --" Éponine shook her head. "Well, what do I know about weddings, anyhow?"

They had not exactly been a commonplace event among most of the people she'd grown up around.

"That's good, though," she went on. "It seems a bit silly to make such a big affair out of the one day, as if that would make a difference."

"Yeah, and neither of us are really high maintenance enough for all the millions of details that go into these things," she said, sliding over the drink. "So we might as well go simple and save ourselves the headaches."

Éponine picked up the glass and toasted her with it, then downed almost half of the contents.

"That's sensible, that is. It isn't as if you've got to impress any of your friends with the ceremony, is it? No, that business is for nobles and the like, who haven't got anything better to do with their time . . . or may unexpectedly have to drop everything and go off to play hero."

"The nobles have to go off to play hero?" Kitty asked. Not that she and Clint hadn't discussed the possibility of being called away from their own wedding for heroics.

Éponine waved a hand, and took another gulp of her drink. "No, no, the other way 'round, that's what I meant to say. They haven't got to worry about that sort of thing the way you do. As if they'd bother. Might get their hands dirty. Couldn't have that, could we?"

"It is easier to let other people do it," Kitty agreed. "Though then they're missing out on the fun."

Well, mostly fun.

Éponine eyed her over the top of the glass. "How much fun is it, really?"

Kitty shrugged. "Depends on who you are. On one hand, I get to do some really cool stuff that most people wouldn't believe me if I told them. On the other, it can also get pretty dangerous and some bad things can happen, too. So it's fun, but it's got its downsides."

Éponine frowned, swirled her drink just so she could hear the ice clink against the sides of the glass, and took another sip. "Seems a lot of trouble to go to for people who aren't likely to even know what you have to do. Doesn't that ever bother you?"

"No," she said, and amended, "Sometimes it bugs me when we help someone who turns right around and says something racist about mutants, and I don't like that whatever we do gets reported as us being the bad guys. But that's part of the job for now, and somebody's got to do it."
