The Beach, Wednesday after sunset

Some people might have mourned the end of summer. Allie was just going to enjoy the fact that the sun was setting earlier and her nights were getting longer.

Tonight that meant wading along the edge of the water and enjoying the warm air.

Jessica had been doing enough mourning. She didn't have any in reserve for a season. All she knew was that it was still warm enough for a run on the beach, so that's what she was doing. And if she ended up being social because of it, she'd live with that.

"How's the water?" she asked as she approached, slowing to a jog.

"Pretty warm," Allie replied, stepping a little closer to the beach. "You should try. It's probably a good way to cool down."

"Cool down? I've still got a half hour of running to do," Jessica scoffed lightly as she trotted to a stop, if that were a way one could scoff. "But I could probably use a break."

She started to kick her shoes off and everything. She'd probably regret not untying them later when she had to put them back on, but that was a problem for the future.

"Breaks are good," said the girl who'd never formally exercised in her life. "Besides, enjoy the beach now. A few more weeks and it'll start getting too cold for getting wet."

"I don't appreciate beaches enough. I'm way too much of a city person," Jessica admitted as she waded in. "I'm Jessica, by the way. I'm sure I've seen you around, but I don't know your name. Just like a city person."

"Allie," she replied. "I was a sitting person, but after being here almost three years, small town life is starting to agree with me."

"Are you a student?"

"I was. Graduated a year ago," Jessica said. "Now I split my time between the Trooper Station, Stark's, and just general existence."

"Friday nights at Caritas, and generally lurking around. Except for the nights I'm out on my bike," Allie told her. "It's quiet, but I don't mind."

"Bicycle bike or motorcycle bike?" Jessica checked. "Big difference between the two."

"Motorcycle bike," she grinned. "I just got it this summer."

"I know a lot of motorcycle people. I'm not one, but I can appreciate the interest," Jessica said. "Just checking, you take it out around the mainland, right? You don't do any kind of crazy stuntperson racing through the streets and stairs here?"

Considering she hadn't arrested Allie for doing that, she figured it was a safe bet. But her Hawkeye absolutely would do that if he had half a reason to. And he'd do it no-handed because he was shooting something.

Allie tipped her head, trying to picture riding on the island. "Nope, I'd have to go way too slow. I just ride on the mainland. That's more fun."

"You don't have to go that slow if you're a crazy person like some of the people I know," Jessica said. "How often do you get out to ride?"

"Most nights," she admitted. "After I get up I'll make a pass around the island, read for a while and then head out after midnight for a ride. I'm a vampire, so late nights don't bother me."

"Ah, to live in a place where that sentence isn't insane," Jessica said. "Feels like home. I'm a kind of former superhero, so I can relate. Although for me it's less about a flipped sleep schedule and more about being too busy to get much sleep."
