Vincent and the cook were watching the Food Network in the kitchen. Priestly sat on a counter behind them both, taking notes.

Eliot was avoiding the whole thing. And occasionally muttering about backseat chefs. And wondering when this weekend was going to end.

Spicy Orange Zest Beef
Oven roasted potatoes with orange zest
Orange cookies with sweet orange glaze

"The words 'orange zest' have lost all meaning," Priestly noted. Eliot sighed in agreement.

Luke's was open.

Dinah had a bet with herself about where she'd find Priestly; she just didn't realize it would be so entertaining where he was.

"Hey, dude. Is that Vincent?" Swoop-hug! "Also, have you been bitten by a gremlin and thus don't even recognize me, because if so, Awkward."

"Dinah! I . . . have not? Which you can usually tell?" He looked down at himself. "Am I wearing something weird and didn't notice?"

"Weirder than usual?" Dinah grinned wickedly. "You know, I can't remember if I've ever seen you gremlin-bit. But I don't think now's the time, 'cause those gremlins out there look way nastier than usual."

So, yeah. There were a LOT of people on the island this weekend. Kathy had ducked her head into last night's dance, seen a horde of strangers, and had immediately bailed. Today didn't seem to be much better, but she was going stir-crazy in the dorms and had decided to wander over to Luke's for lunch.

There were strangers here, too, but in much more manageable numbers, and most of their attention seemed to be on some kind of World Cup for chefs or whatever.

"Hello?" she called, making her way over to her regular seat at the counter.

"Oh yeah? What, are they bigger or something?"

"Could you two keep it down?" the cook asked. "We're trying to watch something, here. NOT THE PEPPER YOU ASSHOLE!"

"Kathy!" Eliot brightened right up when he saw her. "What can I get you? It doesn't have to have orange zest in it."

Seriously. That was way too much orange zest.

Dinah hid behind Priestly, and grinned at the other hot guy who was keeping away from the kitchen TV. "Serious fans of cooking are scary," she whispered, and then in a more normal tone, "The gremlins look like their fangs are longer than their faces right now. But I could be wrong." Had she met Other Hot Guy before?

Priestly looked between Dinah and Eliot, smirking. "Are you eying up my successor? You know he's, like, fifty."

Eliot growled. "I'm thirty nine!"

"Umm, okay?" Kathy said, still kind of side-eyeing whatever was going on with the TV. "Would it be too much trouble if I asked for some spaghetti? Sorry, I woke up craving Italian."

And, sure, there was a whole Italian place down the road, but she liked Luke's.

"You look good for thirty-nine," Dinah told him shamelessly, and gave him a wink. "Maaaaybe? But I bet he has a girlfriend or something if he's almost forty. Also, shush, Priestly. Working my vibes. Being subtle." Leaning on his head so she could watch Vincent and Cookie froth at the mouth back in the kitchen.

"Sure thing." Eliot clapped his hand on the counter and stood up.

"I got it!" Vincent called.

"No, I've got it," said the cook.

"You never use enough garlic."

"You have a garlic problem!"

Eliot sighed. "It might take a little while."

"I don't know man, he's super grumpy." Priestly shook his head. "But hey, if that's what you're into right now, you go get it, girl."

"Is it because his team lost in the Food Playoffs?" She could make him feel better about that! Look at those arms! "Also, I saw you talking to like five other people with your face at the dance. Super-weird."

Kathy was staring into the kitchen. "Umm? I like garlic?" she offered, then looked back at Eliot. "Who's that?" she mouthed.

"No, I think he's just constitutionally grumpy," Priestly said. "But you should ask Karla and Momo. Take his picture and send it to them."

Torture them, Dinah. Torture them like the wind.

Parker was only mildly grumpy and slightly hungover-- look, last night's Re-Meeting of Everyone had necessitated *some* alcohol.

"Coffee. Black." She still had her shades on. "Food. Things." She paused. "Now. Please."

Eliot shrugged. "He showed up yesterday to check the freezer's generator and then didn't leave. I think he's the former owner."

There was a strange, growly moaning noise coming from somewhere. Eliot's head twitched to the side as he listened. "D'you hear that?"

"You don't put the tomato sauce in yet," Vincent grumbled. "You have to saute the onions first!"

Parker appeared on the counter. As she sometimes did. Eating a humongous donut with Froot Loops on it, and ignoring everyone.

Eliot liked this woman. He grabbed the coffee pot and a mug and started pouring. "Meat or vegetable?"

Eliot scowled at her. Not so much out of anger but just because that was what his face did when he didn't know what was going on.

Priestly laughed. "Masterful."

"He has a very cute resting grump-face," Dinah opined. "Hmmm. All the food competition is making me actually hungry." She sat down with her most pathetic starved expression. "Waffles? Someone? Please? I won't take any more pictures!"
