Student Art Show, Community Center, Saturday Evening

A meeting room at the community center had been nicely appointed for an evening show of students' work, with pieces hung on the walls and a small stage set aside for monologues and musical performances. The food wasn'tquite as abundant as it had been the day before, but there was still plenty of cheese, crackers, crudités and non-alcoholic beverages to go around -- plus some wine for anyone who was or could pass for 21.

And, of course, there was glitter on every horizontal surface. Some traditions were important.

"Would you mind keeping down that low cackling?" Frank asked the shadows, a deep fear rising for unexplainable reasons. Well, briefly unexplainable. "I'm doing my best to drink away very specific feelings and that kind of cackling only adds to them for currently unexplainable reasons."

"Oh but I know, Frank Doyle," a shrill voice cooed. "That's exactly why I'm laughing! Your fear is delectable."

"That voice!" Frank said, dramatically. "No! It can't be! You're supposed to be trapped in a well, hopefully forever!"

"That's right! 'Twas [insert the number years you're going with between that piece of canon and now] that you and your little doof friend boarded me up in that well. 'Twas half that time since I found a hammer with which to un-board myself up. 'Twas half that time since I found a delicious new young boy to snack on and get my strength up. And 'twas half that time since I remembered I could astral project, being that I am an ancient evil being and all, and skip the whole unboarding up the well entirely. AND NOW HERE I AM TO HAUNT YOUR EVERY WAKING MOMENT at least until this charming little event your school is putting on ends and I go back to my well for awhile."

"Point of clarification while I'm frozen in utter terror: Just my every waking moment?" Frank asked. "What would happen were I to - hypothetically - go to sleep?"

"I'd have to re-project," Nightmares admitted. "Which is really kind of a pain, SO I'LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP YOU COWERING AWAKE IN TERROR."

"Well, good job of it so far. I couldn't even imagine sleeping at the moment due to all of this cowering," Frank said in full cower. "And believe me, I'm imagining very hard right now."

"Thank you! I do work hard at being absolutely terrifying, you know. It's nice to have that validated from time to time. ALSO YOUR FEAR GIVES ME POWER! EEEEHEHEHEHEEHEEEEE!"

Frank tilted his head. "You know, I probably shouldn't admit this, but that laugh really undermines the otherwise very scary presentation." He poured himself a drink and was already pouring a second one by the time he continued speaking. "It's not really funny, but it's definitely not scary."

"Wait, do you think? What about the other one? The 'MWAHAHAHAHA' one, was that better?"

"Oh, definitely," Frank said. "I was at my wit's end after you used that one. Right now I'm more at my wit's middle. And that's being generous."

He took another drink as the middle of his wit processed some information.

"See, that's constructive. Unlike the feedback from SOME elder demons I could name. . . ."

"To be fair, they are demons," Frank said. "Although I could offer some more advice, if you're open to it. I'm not one to be pushy with my opinions out of turn." He just always felt that it was his turn to be pushy with opinions.

"No, no! Being terrifying is always a work in progress."

"Okay, then. I appreciate the opportunity to help. So, next time you're trying to feed on someone's deep-rooted terror, it might be a good idea NOT TO tell them that you're astral projecting," Frank said. "I've dealt with more non-corporeal monsters than I know what to do with! How can I possibly be terrified of a clown that can't even touch me, let alone kill me?"

"Ah, but this means you can't touch me, either! There's nothing you can do to stop me from haunting you!"

"Oh, no, and I'm still very scared, I promise. You'll still dine well," Frank said. "But with some combination of ear plugs and NyQuil, I'll get a good sleep tonight. So if you'll excuse me - and you kind of have to - I'm going to go shopping."

But first he refilled his glass.

"Oh, no, of course, go about your business. AND SO WILL I! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA."
