Student Art Show, Community Center, Saturday Evening

A meeting room at the community center had been nicely appointed for an evening show of students' work, with pieces hung on the walls and a small stage set aside for monologues and musical performances. The food wasn'tquite as abundant as it had been the day before, but there was still plenty of cheese, crackers, crudités and non-alcoholic beverages to go around -- plus some wine for anyone who was or could pass for 21.

And, of course, there was glitter on every horizontal surface. Some traditions were important.

April and Mal were so ready to appreciate some art. After a day outside exploring the island, it was good to be indoors and surrounded by free food.

Dante was just here for the free food; what few things he'd made in art class that he hadn't paved over or otherwise destroyed were tucked in a drawer somewhere in his room, hopefully never to be found by anyone.

Still, he turned up. Looking faintly disappointed about the food.

Sophie had enough experience with art, of course, to tell the good from the bad, the real from the fake. But also an appreciation for talent that had as much to do with effort as for the final work.

"Really, Nate. Just be glad the others don't have anything displayed here that we need to be polite about."

Frank's installation was a piece called "Empty Bottles From Today." The impressive part wasn't how many bottles there were, nor was it the fact that the number of bottles was growing. No, the most impressive part was the rate at which the number was growing.

Isabela's entry was a piece called "Rivaini Cultural Traditions Through An Antivan Lens".

She'd spent quite a lot of time with an art book this afternoon coming up with that title.

April's piece was a scarf she had embroidered in her spare time. If you looked closely, you'd notice shapes and symbols embroidered into it that represented things she liked, like a big yellow sun, a pair of crossed axes, a sleeping raccoon, a pair of pink flip-flops and a red notebook that looked a lot like the diary she could often be found carrying around Fandom.

Okay, so eventually Dante gave in and parked one of the canvasses he'd coated in white paint post-actual arting here.

With 'fuck you' written on it.

Gwen forgot about this! And she'd been planning on just doing something since she was on StuCo, so yesterday she'd had to ditch class and run to the art store.

On display now was a piece of black cloth stapled over a canvas. There were bits of glitter on it that had gotten there just by nature of being in Fandom.

It said something! Like "I forgot about this and maybe it looks deep."

After last year's gremlin-induced embarrassment, Kathy had sworn on a stack of bibles that she was never, ever singing in public again. Ever.

But Sarah had insisted and then reminded her how she'd taken the fall for that and then threatened to tell their parents that Kathy was apparently flirting with boys and somewhere in the intersection of pestering, guilt, and blackmail, Kathy found herself reluctantly agreeing.

God, Sarah, you were such a brat.

"Hi, my name is Kathy Li and I'm singing, With the Heart to Forget You," she said, doing her best not to make eye contact with anyone. Nervous, the first few lines were breathier than she would have liked, but she got into the swing of it soon enough.

Frank was in the corner, making art by emptying a bottle. He was weirdly nervous, a feeling he couldn't remember the last time he felt it, probably thanks to liquor. And he felt worried that liquor wasn't covering up that feeling. And then he felt betrayed about that very same thing.

In short, Frank was feeling complex feelings and he did not like it! Not one bit! Not even half of a bit! Hopefully it would pass.

Much like Frank, Sarah had a really weird feeling when she was standing near the shadowy corners. Sadly, however, she didn't have any alcohol to fend them that feeling off with.
